Gloves for nappy changing

Commented on this in another thread and given various reactions, was wondering whether I am one of the only ones to wear gloves for nappy changing.

My main reasons are than it is hygenic, but above all it makes messy nappies far less icky and time confuming, just being able to peel a pair of gloves off and bin them.

Does anyone else do this?

TooTicky · 19/09/2006 20:19

Goodness me, no. I try to avoid disposable products as much as I can.

yes my dd when she changes her dolls, she is obsessed with it as the girls at nursery use them to change the babies nappies, and if we run out, i get some from the petrol station!!!

each to there own i think it is an individual thing

I too just wash my hands afterwards. Think about how much extra waste you're generating, plus doesn't it cost a fortune?

Blondilocks · 19/09/2006 20:22

I think I would if/when I have my next LO as I have quite long nails.

WigWamBam · 19/09/2006 20:23

Hand-washing is good enough for me as a hygiene measure, and I'd rather not add to landfill with disposable gloves. Each to his own, but for me it would have been unnecessary and too fussy.

moondog · 19/09/2006 20:23

barking
very wasteful too

PanicPants · 19/09/2006 20:24

No! And I thought I had problems with hygene. But know where you're coming from.

If you have the knack you don't usually get any poo on your hands and anti-bac handwash will sort you out

PrettyCandles · 19/09/2006 20:26

I have only done this when one of us (either the baby or me) has had gastro, as I have a horror both of catching it and of having to deal with it in my child while I'm still ill. Though I did pack disposable gloves in my nappy bag for a couple of months after each child had had their polio vaccines, as my sister has compromised immunity and I didn't want to put her at any risk if she changed nappies.

Other than that - life's too short. Besides, then you miss out on the lovely part of nappy-changes: feeling their wonderful flesh.

janesmom · 19/09/2006 20:28

Fair enough. I guess it is a bit wasteful. I don't really do it from the infection-control perspective really, more an issue of the sheer convenience of simply snapping on gloves and peeling them off when we are in a rush, or I am doing off things.

I would never have thought of putting gloves on and taking them off before and after every change as convenient! For me it would have been quite the opposite - I just got on with it and then washed my hands. Being in a rush would have made me far more likely to want to avoid wasting time doing unnecessary things like putting gloves on.

I really thought this was a wind up ...... soap & water?? a nail brush?? I can understand your reasoning prettycandles but for most people.... am gobsmacked

TooTicky · 19/09/2006 20:37

Panicpants, anti-bac handwash has toxic ingredients and doesn't get hands significantly cleaner than ordinary soap and water.
