Its my daughters birthday soon, and we've always donea little party for her to celebrate. Iv realised its always only family there and maybe one or two other children. This year it looks like it's family again and one other child as the people I invited are busy on that date.

She socializes so well, put within a group she will interact and try to play with other children. The play group we went to twice a week closed down to lack of funds and the preschool iv put her name down for haven't sent us a letter yet, they haven't told me if she has to be 3 or 4 to attend and when I called to check I was told I'd receive a letter.

We go to the park alot but as I don't drive, we don't have much to do, and no one ever seems to come over to visit. I feel like iv let her down and it feels quite lonely being just us.

Anyone else in the same situation ? Should I feel as bad as I do?

We're in a similar situation in that we never go anywhere, apart from Tesco or for a walk, and there are few if any children locally my dc's age. Apart from family, there is noone else we could invite to a birthday party etc. The only difference is that I have 2 dc (1.10 and 3.4) who play fight and argue like cat and dog together and they both go to nursery 3x days a week - I suppose that stops us feeling lonely.
I'm not worried or guilty though about their lack of friends; I'm sure that as they go to school they'll meet make friends and play with more children their age, and at the moment they don't seem bothered that they don't go out and play with others.

I thought 'proper' friendships tend to establish more when they go to school? My ds is only 8mo so I might be totally wrong but I assumed that at 3 they played with other children but didn't necessarily forge lasting friendships.

Do you know anyone else with similar age children you could invite?

Don't feel bad. It's hard being on your own so much with a small child but it won't last forever and one day you will miss it, the good bits anyway. You certainly shouldn't feel like you've let her down, it is just circumstances. She has plenty of years ahead of her at school around lots of children - you say she socialises well so it won't be long before you are worrying about too many children coming to the party!

Are there any other groups you could attend or does your dc qualify for the 15 hours' childcare funding yet? That might ease the lonely feeling somewhat.
