Any other student nurses and midwives panicking about NHS budget cuts ? Will there be jobs for us at the end of the hard years of study ?

Every week there seems to be reports of low staff levels in the NHS. It seems we are massively short of midwives and patient care is suffering as a result. Budget cuts are meaning job losses across the board and leaving thousands of trained clinical staff out of a job .

Does anyone else worry about what these doom-mongering reports will mean for all us students ? Will there be any jobs left at the end of it for us ?

I'm on the very first rung of the study ladder, so it's going to be around 5 years before I'm qualified. Hopefully something drastic will have been done in the meantime and the NHS will be on the road to recovery, but what about those nurses and midwives who will qualify in the next year or 2 ? What will be left for them ?

It is a real concern to me, I have to admit. The time and energy invested in studying for my RGN qualification will be massive, the strain on my marriage and my kids will be considerable when I'm being buried beneath assignments, placements and exams. Will it all be worth it ?

Dont mention it, it is the one and only thing that I am now worried about, I am trying to convince myself that due to me living in a large city with at least six large hospitals, that there will always be a job available.

But I absolutely understand where you are coming from, its scary- how can we not need nurses and midwives? The very idea is ludicrous.

have you been on here- www.studentnurse.org.uk ?

ask the same question- im sure you will be inundated with answers

good luck in your access Nom, you can pick my brains if ever necessary!

I know it's a while back, but i did some of my nurse training (hated it but that's by the by). At the time, we had the same thing: there'll only be jobs for a few of you; only two from the last group of qualifiers have found jobs; if you're strggling financially now give up..... within two years, there was that huge nursing crisis and simply not enough nurses to go round.

it's at least in aprt a cyclical thing: no jobs so colleges recruit less / less apply anyway / more drop out because they are worried- so there are less who qualify, more spare jobs....

Thanks for your responses

Tiredemma, I'm not that far from you so hopefully finding a job shouldn't be too horrific. I do, however, get the feeling that I'm boarding a sinking ship
