Is it possible for a 12 week old to be teething?

My DD will be 12 weeks tomorrow. She is normally a very contented baby, although I posted a couple of days ago about disrupted naps. She was unbelievably difficult to settle at bedtime tonight, and whilst I know it could be any number of things at her age, she has been chewing on her fist (viciously!) the past two days, and it doesn't seem to be hunger related.

She has also been very drooly (if that's a word) but I'd assumed that was because of her dummy. When she was having her last feed before bed it seemed to be causing her discomfort to suck and she kept stopping and crying out. I rubbed some dentinox on her gums and she calmed instantly and fell asleep shortly afterwards.

Now, I know the magic effect of the dentinox could well be coincidence, but is it possible that she is having some teething symptoms? She seems ridiculously young. Anyone have any experience of teething in such a young baby?

Perfectly normal to be teething now. It usually starts around 4 months, but 3 months is certainly not unheard of, a few are even born with teeth!

yes my dts started teetering around the same time. I think it is pretty common to.

Hope it is not too bad for her.

Some babies are born with teeth, so yes, perfectly possible!

Yes. First symptoms and tooth appeared around then. It's still ok to BF if you want, I managed until after the full set appeared, around 18mo.

Oh no! I suspected as much Sad. She's very little for her age (low birth weight) so it seems even more upsetting. Oh well, better stock up on the dentinox!

Oh yes! All my dcs first tooths (?) have come through before they were 4 months old.

They can cause pain before they appear so while you might not see or feel anything yet, your dd will be feeling it Sad. Dentinox and bonjela in every room in the house, and don't forget the calpol if its gets too bad.

There is a development leap at that age, which could be unsettling her.

She could also be teething as pp said. Teething pain usually only lasts for a couple of days at a time though.

Definitely. My 16 week old started 5 weeks ago...with his back molars!!!!

You need anbesol liquid. Seriously. Best. Thing. Ever.

weegiemum · 15/08/2014 21:25

My dd1 was born with a blister on her gum and her first tooth cut at 10 weeks!

workingtitle · 15/08/2014 21:28

Oh yeah, Anbesol is great, as Fairywhitebear says. It's a liquid which I personally find easier than gel (that just gets swallowed in lumps).

Thanks for the advice. OK to use Anbesol with a baby under 3 months?

Just realised I said she was 12 weeks today and she's actually 11. My brain is like mush!

My DD started showing signs of teething at 8 weeks. Unfortunately her first teeth didnt appear until 6 months! It can be a long, drawn out process. Just repeat the mantra 'this too shall pass' Smile.
