I've bought my 3 month old sma stay down formula as she's sick quite a bit, I made the formula like normal, with a medium flow teat and baby couldn't suck it through:-/

use a faster teat as it is thicker than normal milk

did you make it up as directed with cold water as heating it thickens the milk? (have just checked the preparation instructions)

Instructions for SMA Staydown:

1)Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.

  1. Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool before measuring the required amount of water (see feeding guide on can) into the sterilised bottle. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

  2. Place teat and cap on bottle and cool bottle under running water, then refrigerate until cooled. WATER MUST BE CHILLED PRIOR TO ADDING POWDER TO MAKE FEED. Use water within 24 hours.

  3. Prepare each feed as and when your baby needs it. Using the scoop provided in the can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide on can) to the refrigerated water, levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can.

  4. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and mix the powder and water together by ROLLING THE BOTTLE VIGOROUSLY BETWEEN YOUR HANDS – DO NOT SHAKE.

  5. Allow feed to reach room temperature and feed within 2 hours. DO NOT WARM FEED AS IT WILL CAUSE MILK TO THICKEN.

My dd was a lot less sick when I changed from Sma to cow and gate. Might be worth a try. Its cheaper to where I am

SMA staydown should be made with cold water unlike other formula but hence is high risk for cronobacter sakazakki so should make sure you talk to health visitor/doctor as they can give you advice on whether the risk of cronobacter infection is outweighed by the benefits of the formula for reflux.
