Ditching the dummy

Looking for a bit of advice please - my DD is 24 months and has a dummy for naptime/bedtime only. Recently she has started moving about in the cot more and is losing her dummy quite a lot meaning shouts from her for her dummy, which is invariably, wedged between the mattress & the cot or fallen out on to the floor.

She has never slept through the night even with her dummy close by so getting up in the night is nothing new but the shouts for the dummy mean more frequent waking. This is making me consider trying to get rid of the dummy but am in two minds, as she's shouting out for it she clearly wants it and as soon as its nap/bed time she asks for her dummy.

Any experience/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your DD is 2 (not 24 months which makes her sound so much younger). I never fussed about a dummy - he gave it up when he was ready.

Thanks for letting me know how old my child is, very helpful.

I said 24 months on here as I am looking for advice relating to a child who has just turned 2, not one who is 2, coming up for 3. I was trying to be clear on her age when asking for experience, etc.

Hi Mumaa - do you think you could swap the dummy for a cuddly toy or something? Maybe DD could switch her comfort. Might be worth a try. Hope this helps :0)

The age format is then 2.5 2.8 etc. Then we don't have to do maths all the time Smile

Get one of those cuddly toys where the dummy is built it. She'll soon fine it herself.

Dd has a cuddly toy rabbit called a sleepy tot or something. Its soft and its paws are Velcro and can hold a dummy so if she loses it she can just reach for the toy. She's 18 months (or 1 and a half) Grin

UriGeller · 14/08/2014 13:36

Oh Arabella, But does 2.8 mean 2 and 8 12ths (as it should) or 2 and 8 months?.

Its so confusing. Good job its not the law or anything isn't it?

My parents just solved this problem for us! DS is 2.5, and while he only had the dummy for nap and bedtime, he was pretty attached to it. Went away with husband for a couple of days, Grandma and Grandad came to stay. Grandad forgot the dummy on the first night, then when Grandma did the next night she also "forgot". Lo and behold by the time we came home he's no longer asking for it.

I've put it down to the break in routine, it was clearly a habit for him rather than something he actually NEEDED.

Good luck!

ApplebyMennym · 14/08/2014 13:40

I mean 2 and a half by 2.5, not 2 years and 5 months. Although he's actually 2 years 8 months...

mumaa · 14/08/2014 13:43

Thanks Griffomais - should have said that she has the dummy AND a cuddly toy, though she is FAR more attached to the dummy, but I think your exchanging it for something else might be a good idea! Thank you

Thanks all - sounds like I might need to send her to gran's house! Will try some suggestions on here, much appreciated!
