Childcare Vouchers. Quick question...

I'm 17 weeks pregnant, and have asked my company's CFO about Childcare Vouchers, his response was that I can apply once my baby is born. So just wanted to check whether that was correct?
Thanks in advance

That's correct. If you can afford it and your childcare costs are going to exceed the vouchers then it's nice to bank some during mat leave.

Thank you!

Also remember that if your pay is just statutory (or nothing), then the employer can't deduct from that, yet can't remove the entitlement you would have if you weren't on maternity leave, so they have to pay the vouchers on top of SMP.

Apparently they only have to pay you the vouchers while you're on SMP if you were already receiving them before you got pregnant, ie if you already had a child and were receiving them. That is what my work told me anyway! And apparently you also have to have chosen a nursery to get the vouchers?

I think your employer might be wrong about only having to pay the vouchers if you were getting them before pregnancy. My employer certainly paid them, and they are generally very very good at getting these things right. Maybe post in the Employment topic to see if one of the employment/HR members will reply?

When I signed up for the vouchers during my first maternity leave, I was able to tick a box on the voucher provider's website to say I didn't know the Childcare provider yet. You do have to name the child/ren I think though.

My work's maternity provision is 6 months on full pay and the rest on SMP. I was told that I could do the salary sacrifice for the 6 months and get the vouchers but I'd have to opt out after that as they weren't required to pay them on top of SMP. Am really annoyed if I was lied to, esp as DS is now 6 months Angry

There is a booklet from one of the providers http://www.kiddivouchers.com/pdfs/Childcare%20vouchers%20during%20maternity%20leave.pdf that describes HMRC's opinion on claiming Childcare vouchers. That opinion is based on two principles; firstly that non-cash benefits (which salary sacrifice is) should be maintained through maternity leave and secondly, that deductions can't be made from SMP.
