Hi there, my 18 month old has had a temperature the last few days 40.1 friday and 39 last night. thing is it has been yoyo-ing up and down for 2 days. she's not eating food or drinking much. she has no symptoms of any colds or anything. doctor says sounds viral and to just use medicine to control the temperature. it has come down to 38 but she's still not happy. clingy and crying alot. she will only eat strawberries and nothing else. could teething cause such high temperatures? any advice on what to do? I've been told to stay away from fruit but if its the only thing she will eat should I let her have it? xx

Teething does not cause temperature. But, when a child has a high temperature the gums are softer so teeth can more easily come through. Many people think that teething causes temperature but it is in fact temperature that facilitates teething.

I think you just need to let her eat what she has an appetite for.

Did the doctor look in her throat and listen to her chest?

I would take her back to be seen, to be honest. Good luck.

Did the doctor look at her throat? If she's not eating or drinking it's likely to be sore, and she's at risk of dehydration. Lots of wet nappies? Did the doctor test her urine? I wouldn't be happy with a diagnosis of a virus TBH, especially as you can't get her temp down fully. Can you get her seen by the out of hours? She could have a UTI, so they need to check her wee and everything else.

Teething doesn't make children ill - a bit grizzly and perhaps off their food but not what you describe. It sounds viral to me too - keep the fluids in, and if not showing signs of improvement soon just take her back to the GP.
