Nappies leaking poo down leg - advice?

DS is 10 weeks old and in size 3 Pampers, as size 2 started cutting in to his chubby thighs.

When I hear mumsnetters mention the dreaded poonami, it's normally going up the back. But with our litte poop machine it seems to be the leg that leaks (usually when he's in a brand new outfit...!) It stained his bouncy chair and I got it all over my arm when yesterday's little incident occurred. Luckily it was just before leaving the house - no idea what I'd do if it happened in his car seat or while out at a cafe!!

Any idea what causes this? Creases in the nappy when he's been moving? Loose clothing not holding nappy secure enough? I don't believe they're too big or small nappies...

Please help, DH must be getting fed up with me calling up the stairs to his office when he's working from home - "Help needed immediately - poonami, shit everywhere!!"

Size 3 does sound pretty big for 10 weeks - how much does he weigh? Could you try size two in a different brand that might be comfier on his legs.

Flingmoo · 08/08/2014 12:10

Thanks - he weighs 11 and a half pounds. He's an average build, not overly chunky or slight, but he does have sturdy rugby player thighs! Yeah I might have to try a different brand. Although I am a fan of the "wetness indicator" on pampers, I know it's just common sense but it does help me judge at a quick peek whether it's wet or not. He seems to fill them very quickly at the moment, maybe the hot weather or something.

You might get less washing with cloth! At least a cloth wrap over the top would save the clothing.

I would suggest to try changing a touch more frequently. At 10 weeks he's guzzling well and growing fast. Therefore weeing a lot too!

I have just sent my first ever letter of complaint to a company and it happened to be Pampers. My Dd is 20 months old and i'm having to change her clothes and bedding everynight as she is leaking out of the sides of Pampers nappies. She normally wears Asdas little Angels with no problem and i have swopped back to them now. She doesn't normally wear nappies in the day as she is toilet training but we used a pampers nappy on her the other day and it looked to us like the elastic around her leg was very lax.

Being fair to Pampers though they did respond very quickly to my email amd have said they are sending a voucher out to my house for more nappies. I honestly don't think i will be using it though.

Pampers never suited any of my 3 dc, leakage from wee and poo every time! I used to use huggies but now use morrisons own brand. I suggest that you give other brands a whirl till you find one that suits your dc better. (Probably be much cheaper too!)

OP apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs, but are you making sure all of the little leg ruffles are poking out and lying flat? The leg ruffles are (apparently) extremely important in the fight against leakage.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 22/08/2014 03:56

Try a different grand. Pampers aren't great to be honest.

FishWithABicycle · 22/08/2014 04:53

as TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle said, the "poo catching frills" are vital, so that may be the issue.

Also, you really do need a firm grip between nappy and skin, so it may be that you are putting them on too loosely to avoid "cutting in to his chubby thighs". It's OK for there to be an elastic imprint on the skin when you take the nappy off - that's not evidence that the nappy is too tight, it's fine. So long as there is enough "give" in the elastic that you can stretch it further to insert a couple of adult fingers then it's not too tight.

You may find that a two-part reusable nappy suits you better, as then you have soft padding around any elasticated bits and you can achieve good poo-catching without so much cutting into skin.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice! We're trying Morrisons brand this week as an experiment! Have since been having a new nappy issue - getting full of wee at night... I hate to wake him by changing it during the night, but when I pick him up for his dream feed, if can smell the wee :( have tried going up a size but doesn't seem to make any difference. Maybe another reason to try reusables?

I know it sounds daft, but as someone else mentioned, it took me weeks to work out that the "frills" on the legs of disposable nappies must face out. Once you get it right any brand is ok.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 28/08/2014 07:51

Pampers never worked for any of mine. Huggies were good and tesco/aldi own brand.
