Are Bratz dolls a bad influence on little girls?

Hi, I am a new member and mother to two young girls. My sister lives in Australia and has just sent me an article about Bratz dolls and some of their new stuff - apparently they are making padded bras aimed at girls my niece's age (six) and everyone in Australia is in outrage. There's apparently some new Bratz dolls which come in leather and lingerie. I'm just wondering what other mums thinks about the Bratz range at all? Is anyone else concerned that these dolls are too risque for our children? Would really appreciate hearing other mum's views as there is so much pressure on little girls to grow up so fast.

I suppose it depends on whether you buy them or not??

Sandcastles · 17/09/2006 01:13

I haven't seen/heard much of this, but then I don't get out much at the moment (and have no riends in Oz yet anyway ).

But I will say that Bratz dolls are ugly, I mean you take theri feet OFF to change their shoes! WTF?? The ones that I (reluctantly) brought my god daughter had barely ant clothes anyway!

Will be avoided at all costs in this house!

Yes and again just a jazzier funkier version of barby and cindy (with attitude) and no one saw the harm in them back in the day. Just perpetuates the idea of women being playthings NO pun intended! FFS what ever happened to Tiny Tears? but then I'd have some uber fem accuse me that Tiny was just a grooming ground for the purfect wife that drives her 4X4 in shitstreet small suburbia and buys her clothes from next............. online I'm a big Spongebob fan but even that's so yesterday! Sorry bout the ramble, late hr, older mum etc.

Ps I'm a trainee counsellor and after having had quite a hard time of it this past yr, my student officer told me, she had gone out as a grown woman to buy a doll to help her be in touch with her inner child, needless to say on her advice, I took a stroll into Smyths (Big kids toys outlet in Dublin) but zipped straight by the bratz, so if they aint gonna work for a 39yr old pre (just about midlife crisis woman) they sure as f*ck can't be much good for an impressionable six yr old imo.

christie1 · 17/09/2006 02:56

They are horrible. My dd is nto allowed to have them. She got one for her birthday and I gave it away. There are so many other nice dolls out there, she is n't missing anything.

SecondhandRose · 17/09/2006 08:02

Asda did some kids padded bras with Little Miss characters on them and they got pulled off the shelves pretty quickly after complaints.

My daughter has Bratz dolls to play with she doesn't play with them often but I don't have a problem with them at the moment but I will if they get overtly sexual.

Miaou · 17/09/2006 08:42

I don't know, but they will enter my house over my dead body I can tell you!! I find their over-sexualisation very sinister.

My DD loves dismembering my niece's collection of Bratz.
Very healthy attitude IMO.

helsy · 17/09/2006 08:48

My dd has about four Bratz dolls. She likes them. She thinks they're pretty. She knows real women aren't that shape and don't dress that way and I have no evidence (at present) that they are shaping her view of real girls and women - but I may be wrong. Given the other influences she has in her home and school life, I'd be surprised if they were outweighed by what make up a very small percentage of her toys.

Fauve · 17/09/2006 08:59

I think the Bratz cartoons on TV are foul. The characters are incredibly bitchy, and the whole thing makes me gag.

Kelly1978 · 17/09/2006 09:22

dd has one, it was bought for her. She calls it her mary doll. mary is an exgirlfriend of my brother, who was a grunger, so had a unique dress sense! I don't really like them at all, and neither does dd - she prefers pretty princess dolls.

geekgrrl · 17/09/2006 09:47

they're creepy, encourage precocious sexualised behaviour and are just plain wrong.

Am amazed and saddened that they're so popular. Whenever dd gets anything bratz from other people it goes straight in the bin. Gross.

BettySpaghetti · 17/09/2006 09:51

DD (6) doesn't have any Bratz dolls as she doesn't like them and I don't think any of her friends have them either -I'm quite relieved as I really don't like them.

KathH · 17/09/2006 21:36

hm,I'm not keen on bratz but then I was only allowed a Sindy doll rather than a Barbie. I think Sindy was considered more "wholesome" than Barbie who was generally considered a bit of a slapper!

nasty common versions of barbies (and barbies aren't much better imo). wasn't it the bratz cartoon that had a character call someone a 'spaz'? we discussed it on a thread some months back i think. yuk and

incidentally did anyone see the news report on bbc breakfast about the new Sindy dolls? she's been revamped and is now based on a pre-pubescent-type character, much more wholesome and innocent than Barbie. The mums from the test families that tried them out with their little girls were very complimentary about them. Step in the right direction maybe? [hopeful]

TooTicky · 17/09/2006 21:45

They are horrid dolls. I don't think they are suitable for children, makes me very angry that they are marketed for little girls. Yuck yuck yuck!

ledodgyrobespierre · 17/09/2006 21:47

I agree dp went to Asda with dd aged 3 and they came back with some Bratz wellies dd had picked needless to say I sent dp back and he got her some plain ones. It really annoys me they do things in such small sizes they even had Bratz knickers in age 2-3.

Moomin · 17/09/2006 21:49

Here's the new Sindy .

and this is waaaay spooky - old Sindy (scroll down if you dare)!

Mateychops · 17/09/2006 22:43

Oh, pleaaaaase, ladies. If we don't like, don't buy.

Moomin · 17/09/2006 22:45

wouldn't dream of buying but sometimes things are given as gifts; not just the dolls but the doll merchandise

crunchie · 17/09/2006 22:48

My dd's have them, DD1 is 7 and wasn't allowed them until she was 6. DD2 is 5 and has baby bratz but isn't allowed the big ones.

TBH I think they are funny and DD and I spend ages brushing their hair. To her they are simply 'cool' dolls. Some of her friends have them, some don't. Loads have other merchandise though. Mine has one bag, which we use to keep them all in. My main complaint with Bratz is that their ear-rings are ALWAYS falling out and I am always hoovering them up!!

badkarma · 17/09/2006 23:04

It's only a doll ffs. Not life or death. walk pst them if you don't like them, and give them back if you deem them unsuitable gifts
