I am considering applying for the nursing degree in the next year or so.

I have the option of 2 universities close by. One does an ordinary degree in 3 years and the other an honours in 4 years.

Do you think either one will make a big difference to my employment prospects? Otherwise 3 years would be a bit easier!

Oooh umm. My uni offers hons degrees and diplomas (both 3 years though) there seems to be no difference between the jobs you can get on qualifying with the two qualifications so for that reason I would go for the 3 years, its still a degree afterall.

Good luck x

Any other thoughts?

plus with the diploma you're entitled to the NHS bursary, with the 4 yr degree course you aren't (although you can get student loan)

Don't know if it's different in scotland but as fas as I understand there's a bursary for both. I know people who have done both courses and they all got bursaries.

with diploma i'm sure its a grade D nurse job you can applky for and honours is a grade E thats in Scotland and thats what it was when i was at uno 3 years ago anyway. HTH

oh are you in scotland then? Down here you only get bursary if you do the diploma

Am definitely going to do the degree. Not considerng the diploma.

The question is do I do the 4 year hons or the 3 year ordinary degree?

If I am right and there's def a bursary, finances are not too much of an issue.

Still would come out grade D whatever course. My sister did the 4 year hons and her friend the 3 year ordinary. Bothe started off as grade D but sis is now E grade after 3 years.

I did the diploma and was an F grade before i left the NHS. If i had wanted to go any further though, i think i would have needed a degree. Worth doing degree if you want management position eventually, but think diploma is more hands on and i enjoyed it!

wrinklytum · 22/09/2006 19:52

Dont think it really matters tbh.I did a 4 year course some fifteen years ago and am not a high flier,I just enjoy the patient contact not all the managemment malarkey.IMO there is very little difference. At the end of the day everyone qualifies on the same pay band and you could always top up to do the honours element later in your career.Good luck whatever you decide!!!
