changing cloth nappy when out and about?

hello

Have just started using cloth nappies all of the time - previously put dd in a disposable when we were out. Am having a nightmare changing her as she keeps doing explosive poos which is not a prob at home when i have a wet flannel to wipe her and a tub to put the liner into. The last few times got in a right mess and got poo all over the wrap, clothes etc. Any tips? Visited a friend today who was interested in cloth but after seeing the mess we got in she said 'no way i could do that with all that poo everywhere!!' Felt bad i couldn't fight the corner of cloth as was struggling myself!

any advice very welcome please!

I take nappy sacks with me (try to buy the biodegradable ones) and if it's a really hideous nappy I just pop the whole thing into a nappy sack and tie it up securely to take home and deal with there.

I got some plastic wallets with zips on from toyrus and bundled the whole lot in - kept out smells etc and you can clean them.

TooTicky · 15/09/2006 21:18

Yes, just bundle casually into a bag and hand to dp later...

I use washable wipes anyway which are like little flannels - you could always have a couple of flannels with you if you expect a monstrous poo.

Gem13 · 15/09/2006 21:25

I used to carry cloth wipes with me and wet them at the house, cafe, etc. If I was going to be in the car or a park then I carried wet cloths in a tupperware box.

I used to try and get the worst off if I was near a loo and bung them in supermarket bags. You can do quite a neat job so long as you have extra wraps with you (wrap the whole thing back up in the messy wrap). If you are breastfeeding the poo should be pretty inoffensive anyhow to chuck straight into the machine when you get home.

Cappuccino · 15/09/2006 21:27

when dd was very little I used my 'better' nappies when we were out (tots or huggles) cos they are bombproof and don't let the poo out no-how

I do have a minki bag for putting the nappies in now

is your lo still bf? cos I don't remember the explosions happening after weaning

chipmonkey · 15/09/2006 21:37

I have a popolino bag for the dirties. I used to put some cotton wool in it with a few drops of tea tree oil on it but have gotten out of that habit.

bobsmum · 15/09/2006 22:21

agree with others. Bung the whole lot in a nappy sack then in a waterproof drawstring bag (I've got a Stinki Minki ) and then ignore it til you get home. If it's double wrapped it won't smell.

MrsWaggsnapps · 16/09/2006 09:18

whichever liner you use , fold that over the poo and then wipe baby's bum, with nappy still there, dump wipes in nappy as used and then roll it all up and stick in bag, seal tightly

I can remember the first time I took DS swimming when I'd switched to cloth and he wee'd all over the wrap, it took me the length of the swimming lesson to realsie that I could just wipe the wrap down and use it again (D'oh). I keep a spare pair of cotton bottoms pull up overpants in the change bag (they roll up very small) but since then I've never used them and I now stick a pocket nappy in the change bag as it's all of one piece and easy to get on quickly.

sallyrosie · 16/09/2006 14:42

I either used disposable wipes or flannels kept wet in a plastic zipper envelope.
Disposable liner on top of your other liner saves a lot of hassle as can just chuck straight into bin then chuck the rest of the nappy into a bag till you get home.

donnabon · 16/09/2006 17:18

thanks so much for your words of wisdom am so pleased that you guys are there to help! - went out again today and the explosion happened!! Did your BF babies do this? I think where i am going wrong was trying to clean everything up there and then! Will just stick it all in bag and deal with it when i get home. I love the advice to leave it to dh, will definately be trying that one out. Definately start taking wet cloths out with me as much more effective than wipes.

Any other tips you have to share would be greatly appreciated too!

Wipes just seem to move the pooh around don;t they. I use them when out and about tho...I take a waterproof bag with me and bung dirty stuff in that. I do have spare clothes in teh change bag but have only needed them when hes been in a disposable, so oopposite prob to you really. I find my self wishing he was in cloth as its all sooo much cleaner, the flease liners seems to "hang on" to pooh better than teh cake frill on a disy.
All babies what ever nappy they are in do have occasional disaterously explosive poohs, normally at teh worst momnet possinble. Friends boy did it on a plane recently, sat on her lap during landing! YUKKKKK. She had to wrap him her Dhs T-shirt to try and contain teh mess and smell till they were able to clean him up.

bobsmum · 17/09/2006 11:25

Donnabon - what nappies are you using? Both ds and dd were/are in Totsbots plus wrap. Any bf explosions never got onto clothes, although one or two made it onto the wrap. Make your nappy snugger than you think - certainly a little tighter than you would a disposable. Take a spare wrap with you.

donnabon · 17/09/2006 19:07

I use the one life nappies that are the same as the motherease. they hold everything in really well but i get in a mess when removing the liner. I agree that the wipes seem to move everything around!

Unisarah - do you not put a disposable liner on top of the fleece or just a fleece liner all by itself? Is the fleece a better option for absorbing the poo? dd did an explosive poo in a disposable today and you are right the mess was much worse as it immediately came out of the sides and onto her pj's! At least the wrap protects clothes.

How long did it take you all to perfect using cloth, as you all seem to be on to your second child so have lots of experience!!

I use one life nappies with fleece linners, sloppy bf poo just soaks into the fleece, just needing a quick wipe.
While out today ds pooed and had to be changed in the pram, all the poo had been soaked up by the fleece, and the whole lot went into a nappy bag till i got home, it also rinses off really easy then just gets washed with the nappies.

UniSarah · 17/09/2006 21:43

I use flease liner , not paper one. personally i don't like paper liners, havn;t yet found one that I am happy with flushing away, they all seem too solid paper to disolve away and I don't want to block pipes. Also I have found when i did try them that they sort of clung to the pooh AND ds so he ended up EVEN muckyer than with out them, the nappy was cleaner but baby dirttier.
Main reason I use cloth is I dont; wantto be puting pooh into landfill its not good enviromental practise, washing machine water goes to teh sewage works ( unless you are on a septic tank) just like toilet flush does so I have no qualms about washing pooh away.
Flease doesn't absorb pooh as such , but seems to "hang on" to it so more of teh pooh sticks to teh flease than teh child when you peel the nappy off.
At the mo I remove large ammounts of pooh from teh flease with toilet paper and wash teh liners with the nappies at 40. small amounts I dont bother removeing. We are just starting solids so teh pooh is getting more solid and easier to remove. In teh past I didn;t bother and just washed.
Ds is my 1st, he went into cloth from day 10 IIRC. by the time I'd been dealing with it for a couple of weeks I was as competant as I wanted to be. But had had a few crap changes on teh way.

Flamesparrow · 18/09/2006 16:18

I second those saying fleece - with breastfed poo you can just throw the lot in the machine on a rinse before you wash and it will be fine... just whip off, bundle, the chuck in machine at home.

donnabon · 18/09/2006 18:35

i agree about the paper liners - dd is covered in poo - will get hold of some fleece liners and give them a try. The environment is the reason that i have decided to use cloth. I just couldn't put all those disposables in the bin everyday. Am glad that i can post these kinds of queries as none of my friends use cloth nappies.

Little piggie - how are you getting on with one life nappies? i like them but don't like the wraps for the day time as they are too bulky and come down to dd knees - not a good look with a skirt! but think they are great for night time. I got a booster pad with each nappy but am only using this at night time - you mentioned fleece liners too did you buy these extra?

Cheap and easy flease liners- buy half meter of thin ( polartec 100 for example) flease at a haberdashers. cut to shapes that will lie inside your nappies. This gave me 10ish for MEOS from about 3 quids worth of fabric

donnabon · 19/09/2006 12:09

brill - thanks will do - am very glad that this won't cost too much money either....another mum also suggested micro fibre cloths from tescos!

Have no probs with one life nappies, but dont use there wraps. got a couple of fleece wraps for at night and days were ds has no trousers on, 1 totsbots wrap and 2 motherease wraps and 1 little lamb wrap.
At night i use fluffles or bamboozles with a micro fibre cloth, think they are a bit softer than onelife.
