My ds is 8 months and current routine is bath, boob, book, bed. At what age would you stop the pre bed milk feed? Just stressing about return to work (when he is 12 months) and what will happen if i am not home for bed time (he won't take a bottle).

DD is 16 mo and it's still bath, boob, (teeth), book, bed. If I'm not there she'll just take a cup of milk from DH instead. Will your DS drink from a cup (either an open cup or a sippy cup)? DD never took a bottle.

My DS is nearly 3 and still has bath, warm milk, book and bed. He would never take a bottle but would drink from a hard spout sippy cup type thing

We've just stopped pre bed milk (DS 10m). I wanted to have a clear 1/2 hour after any food/drink before teeth brushing as this has been recommended for preventing tooth decay. I had previously fed DS to sleep so was worried about dropping the feed but he has taken the change in his stride.
Routine is now dinner at 5.30-6, play, bath at 6.20ish, teeth, story, say goodnight to things in his room and us, then bed at 7. His last milk is now 3pm.

Thanks for your replies. He will take a small amount of water from a cup so i might try introducing a bit of milk in the cup to get him used to it. Have also been thinking about teeth as i know he needs them brushed after last milk feed but he is always so sleepy. Feeling reassured that your babies all adapted easily even without bottle.

My ds is 14 months his routine
is pjs, bottle, kisses and cuddles for everyone, upstairs teeth then bed. Can't bath him before bed as he gets so hyped up playing and splashing!

My DS has just turned 1 and his routine is tea, play, beaker of milk, bath, teeth, book and bed. We had a sleep/milk dependency issue when he was younger so switched his milk to before bath rather than after following advice from a sleep expert. It's not been a problem for him. Maybe try a beaker as others have suggested?

My ds is 2.7 and still has warm milk before bed , in a tippy cup. It's milk, brush teeth, book , bed. He doesn't have a bath every night as it dries his skin.
Same routine for 8 month old.

My DS is 21months and until he was about one it was bath-teeth-milk-book-bed. Now he's bigger it's milk-bath-teeth-night garden-books-bed. Important to get teeth brushed after milk in my opinion. It also meant we got out of the habit of him falling asleep on the bottle so sleep much improved.

Dd is 18 mo, she had nappy and pyjamas, teeth brushed, breastfeed, story and then bed. Is breastfeeding after she's had her teeth brushed bad for her then? I could switch it round.

workingtitle · 05/08/2014 09:45

I think it's generally good to get in the habit of brushing teeth after any food/drink (except water, obv), but the data on tooth decay and breastfeeding isn't conclusive. For adults, it's recommended that a clear half hour is left before brushing as sugary or acidic food softens the tooth enamel, so best to just let your saliva do some work before going at your mouth with a brush. We're trying to get into that habit with DS now.

Bath/book/bed (7pm lights out) - I never got into the drink before bed even when he was much younger as IMO it made the 'separation' between breast/bed harder ............. so I never had to 'drop' the last feed. Made life a lot simpler Grin.
