Medicine for 1 month old

Any smart ideas for getting a 1 month old, EBF baby to swallow antibiotics?
She is on them 3xday, only 2.5ml but not much of that seems to be going down! Giving via syringe into side of mouth immediately before or during feed but she just spits it out! Not sure what to do...

The only way that worked with DS's reflux meds was to be very patient and dispense it over the course of a couple of minutes in small drops. 2.5 ml can feel like a lot with a small baby!

If you want to use the syringe use your little finger along side it. Put your little finger in los mouth nail on top of tongue and let lo suck. While lo is sucking slot syringe in along side your finger. They can't help but suck your finger so end up swallowing meds. I had to feed my prem twins this way.
If that doesn't work use a straw. Suck it up a straw put your finger over mouth end, like you did as a kid put it in los mouth and take your finger off top. Sometimes it's the size of syringe that allows them to spit it out.

What size syringe do you have? If you don't already have one, get the pharmacist to give / sell you a tiny 1ml one. Much easier to get into a tiny newborn mouth. Aim right for the back of the mouth, to one side to stop her gagging. Obviously you'll need to refill the syringe to get the full dose. You can also get medicine dummies in bigger boots stores, you put the medicine in it then baby sucks it out.

Thanks for the responses. It's a 5ml syringe we have - what the pharmacist gave us. DD doesn't take a dummy so that option is out. Already tried giving small amounts over a few minutes - that didnt work. Will try the finger trick, she does suck on our fingers.

Oh yes, absolutely agree re: a smaller syringe. The pharmacist can give you one.

DS was a little older when he landed in hospital but one of the nurses gave me a very good tip of giving him his antibiotics when he is sleeping! Wait until she is in a deepish sleep 10 minutes or so after falling asleep and then very carefully give her the meds very slowly

I agree that changing to a 2.5ml syringe will help. My dd started on reflux meds at the same age and her little syringe was teeny. If you are bfing you could try sliding it in next to the nipple? Or does it need to be spaced with food?

The little finger trick worked this evening! Full dose swallowed! Fingers crossed it continues.

Glad it worked , one of the best ways for bf babies.
