pegs
a little bucket
one of your old bags
wondercubes (from elc)
little plastic tea set

out of all DDs toys it's what she plays with the most

One of those wooden things with spirals of wire on the top with beads that you push along the spirals. Probably have an obvious name but can't think of it! Anyway, our dds have loved theirs - they are great for motor skills and our 2 yr old still plays with hers.

one year olds don't need toys! let them play with leaves, boxes, bubbles!

Ring stacker. It was wonderful watching ds (16 mo) gradually 'get' it.
Stacking cups again - we have a set of bright and cheap ones from Ikea.
Toy tea set - I sing 'I'm a little teapot' and 'pour' him some tea. He 'drinks' it, holds the cup out for more and 'pours' some himself
e bought ds the 'classic' Fisher-price phone, but because we have a 'modern' one he prefers taking one of his toy bricks, holding it to his ear and going around saying 'hiiii hiiii'

SoMuchToBits · 14/09/2006 22:40

Push along truck with bricks
Sit and ride toy
Stacking cups
Shape sorter
Lift-out peg puzzle
Some sort of bath toy e.g. sort and float boat whale, etc.
Large building blocks

Also my ds had a toy which was a soft starfish with jingly bits in, and ribbons on it. My Mum bought it for him, and it was probbly inexpensive, but he loved it, and so do lots of other younger children who now visit.

Sorry that was more than five, and I also agree with ring stacker, which ds never had, but always enjoyed playing with everyone else's!

A xylophone

foundintranslation · 14/09/2006 22:44

oh yes tamum, a xylophone - ds loves his. We also have a Casio (adult) keyboard which he loves even more

melpomene · 14/09/2006 22:46

A sand pit! We have a sand table on legs which dd2 (16 months) has played with almost every day since she got it for her birthday. She loves helping me build sandcastles, and then knocking them down. She is learning to use a little spade and rake. You can bury things in the sand and then hunt for them, experiment with the textures of wet and dry sand, or even take the sand out and fill it with water, pasta, or flour for a different experience.

And they'll still enjoy a sandpit at age 3 or 4.

tamum · 14/09/2006 22:46

Oh yes, ds had a little Tomy (I think) keyboard that he played with for years! Excellent value.

Some great suggestions on here - thanks everyone for replying

Some of them already on the list - eg wooden push-along-truck, trike, shape sorter. Already have the ikea stacking cups and and xylophone!

Will definitely consider some of the other suggestions I hadnt heard of like the Galt thing with 4 little men, and the frog mortar

melpomene - is your sandtable outside or inside and does the sand not all end up outside of the actual thing itself?

we have cardboard box in the lounge at the moment and dd has filled it with toys and miscellaneous items
