Baby hair - should I be getting it hacked off?

DS had no need for a haircut till he was almost two so am totally clueless. DD has lots if hair - straight on top and ringlets from jaw level but it is very fine baby hair. I have had one trim but worry I should be doing more to encourage thicker hair to come in?

Surely hair grows from the roots it will grow thicker as she gets older. Trims will take the wispy ends off. Her hair sounds lovely BTW.

sonlypuppyfat · 25/07/2014 23:08

So sorry his hair.

abigboydidit · 25/07/2014 23:26

Thanks - it is DD. Realise my OP was confusing. Just a friend from Hong Kong told me I should have shaved DCs heads Shock

It really doesn't matter! I shaved my baby's head and the regrowth was even so appeared thicker iyswim, but it's not really thicker. It's just growing in evenly. Anyway different cultures have different customs. Do whatever you like Smile

PatriciaHolm · 25/07/2014 23:31

Shaving doesn't encourage growth, it just makes it look thicker as it has blunt ends. Up to you!

sonlypuppyfat · 25/07/2014 23:33

I've a Muslim friend and she shaved her daughters head it looked a bit shocking to my eyes, but each to there own.

DD2 had baby hair for years, five seconds in a car seat and it looked like it hadn't been brushed for a week.

It's gradually got a better texture as she's got older, but only with uppity has it suddenly got as long and smooth as DD1's has been since she was 5/6

ElephantsNeverForgive · 25/07/2014 23:37

Puberty, (autocorrect always tries to avoid that word, but that's it's best yet)

lola88 · 26/07/2014 11:44

I would only have it cut to look tidy DShas had a short back and sides from 6 months for girls I think a trim every now and then is fine I used clips to encourage the hair to sit back from DNs face hate to see little girls walking around with hair in their faces!

beccajoh · 26/07/2014 11:47

Oh no leave the ringlets Grin

rootypig · 26/07/2014 11:52

I have the most appalling quantity of hair and have never had my head shaved. HTH Grin

No seriously, no need to.

abigboydidit · 26/07/2014 18:54

Thanks everyone. She had her first trim months ago and if anything it looks shorter now as the ringlets are just getting tighter Shock

YY I agree shaving won't make any difference, that's just a superstition :) It's traditional in China to shave babies' heads which might be why your friend suggested it.

givemecaffeine21 · 26/07/2014 22:10

My friend is a hairdresser and gives DD (2) little trims as she says it helps with the growth & thickness; she's had two trims so far and it's definitely improved the shaping and growth, but had I not got a friend who is a hairdresser, I wouldn't have known to do it yet. I also have a LOT of hair which grows alarmingly fast and thick and no one shaved my head either Grin

PurpleWithaMysteryBun · 26/07/2014 22:25

My DDs hair has only started to get thicker, she is now 5. It started changing about 6months ago, trimming helped a bit but her hair was just wispy and babyish! De tangling spray and patience is all I can recommend.

steppemum · 26/07/2014 22:33

Your friend from Hong Kong is repeating an old wives tale which is very common in Asia.
In many Asian cultures they shave the babies head aged 1, because it is supposed to encourage thicker hair.

It is rubbish, but try convincing someone of that and you will have trouble!

abigboydidit · 26/07/2014 22:55

How funny. I had never heard of it but she was so adamant. Will stick with the curls Wink

My dd has very similar hair to yours by the sound of it. I'm trying to grow but it just getting curlier, not longer! Anyway we just get the ends trimmed every 6 weeks or so.
I was told by a hair dresser that the whole shaving the head to make hair grow thicker is nonsense but I have a friend who has shaved all her children's heads and is adamant it works. I think as others have said its a culture thing, common in Asia.

MewlingQuim · 27/07/2014 11:01

I still haven't cut dd's hair and she is 2 Blush

It's halfway down her back and is lovely.

steppemum · 27/07/2014 21:43

cutting hair can't make it thicker, as that depends on how many hairs per square inch on your scalp.

But when hair is longer, cutting it can oddly make it longer.
The reason is that if the ends split, the hair can break off. My friend is a Sikh and she and her mum have never cut their hair. Her mum's hair is only shoulder length, is has got shorter over the years.
My friend gets hers cut secretly so that is stays long, but her mum doesn't know.

WhispersOfWickedness · 27/07/2014 21:51

Mewling, I am the same, DD is nearly 3 and has never had it cut, it is beautiful, it's long with a slight wave and has ringlets on the bottom couple of inches, lovely!!
Am not planning to cut it any time soon!
