Double Buggy or single & baby carrier for 26 month old & newborn?

DS will be approx 26 months when new baby due in March. Never got on well with tomy baby carrier with DS but see it as easier than a double buggy. DS is very good walker so maybe a buggy board is a good idea?? i would be grateful for any experiences/advise.

i would go for buggy board. JEss was 15 months when becky was born, and my double lasted all of 4.5 months.

She now wants to walk everywhere at 25 months so i let her, ok it takes AGES but its better than having her screaming on the buggy!

hunkermunker · 14/09/2006 09:19

How about a different sling - try a wrap or a ring sling or a pouch. I LOVE slings - had DS1 in the buggy yesterday with my huge nearly 8mo DS2 in his ring sling and it was fab - far nicer than using a double because I could get round the shops - and tickle the back of DS2's neck and kiss his head whenever I wanted

I'd probably get a seat-2-go as well though, in case you want to not wear the sling sometimes and your DS wants to walk more.

moljam · 14/09/2006 09:19

have you thought about a different carrier?my youngest is 9 months but weighs 19 lb 10 and i use an ergo, people use them on bigger children.i had double with dd and ds1 who are 1 year 5 days apart,i couldnt get in anywhere!

I'd go with the seat to go, as well. It worked really well when my dd1 was 2 (15 month gap, so had used a double for a year as well. )

annaspanna · 15/09/2006 20:23

Whats a seat-to-go? A ring sling or a pouch what are these? Whats the difference & do they do them in the shops so i can test them out?

seat to go

You can get them for less money, but this picture explains it better.

If you scroll to the bottom half of this thread these are tons of links telling you all you could want to know about slings

mustrunmore · 15/09/2006 20:44

I hated the seat to go. Never had to push a buggy at such a stupid angle.
But I've just sold it for £1.49 less than I paid, so not too bad!!
Am now thinking a)zapp and 3g board or b)p3 with ds1 standing on that bit at the back for getting it up kerbs.
Thats for the walk to, or definitely from, nursery, starting January (20 mins); still need a double for shopping as it takes ages with no car.

makemineadouble · 15/09/2006 20:47

If I might add my 2ps worth Id go for single and buggy boad they're brill or poss double and let older walk when he wants? ok if youv already got double? dont buy one tho at 26 mnth wont get value. can you borrow or car boot?

BarefootJasnem · 15/09/2006 20:47

I loved mine. We'll have to agree to disagree It does depend what type of pram/buggy it's attached to. I could walk normally with it on my pram, but had to lean a bit with a different buggy. Still better than the buggy board, which I kicked with almost every step for months (but did sell for what I paid for it...)

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 15/09/2006 20:49

single buggy and ERGO carrier. Or Baby Bjorn, which I think is fab.

by the time the bub is out of the carrier she'll be walking, so just get a buggy board.

bighug · 15/09/2006 20:59

My DS was 27 months when my DD was born. I never got on with my sling (very low slung tomy one)so I hired a buggy board wanting to avoid a double buggy. But DS was just a little bit too young to stand for longer trips (e.g. 20 minute walk to park, and would not stay on going round shops etc. I also found it awkward (you can't bump the buggy backwards up steps or kerbs). So after 4 months I bought a maclaren double buggy new from kiddicare website for £100. It transformed my life. Although a little heavy to push when loaded with 2 kids, it went through standard width doorways and I never really had access problems with it. It meant I could walk places at my pace whenever I wanted, they could both sleep if they wanted, if it rained I could cover them up...I was a big fan. Sometimes DS walked too, I didn't feel that he avoided walking, we just had the option if he felt tired. Get a double!

With that age gap I would go for a double buggy. We got a cheap graco duosport one and it was fine just for that year until DS2 was 3.

This time around DS2 is 3 now DS3 is here and we have bought a great Bertini shuttle with an integrated buggy board. It's much more stable than a standard buggy board on our M?&P pliko and I would really recommend it (it's got a sturdy build, but is good to push). There was one on Ebay with £100 off because it has last year's colours.

I hope this helps.

I didn't get on with the buggy board at all.

Heard rave reviews about the Ergo carrier. If you have one then you can always swap the baby and your DS around.

i had all sorts of double buggies with ds and dd1,they were only 11 months apart.i got a buggy board when ds1 was 2.5 and it was brilliant,he loved it.
when i had dd2,ds2 was 29 months. i was going to just get a buggy board but a friend found a tandem buggy very cheap for me,and i was so glad she did cos ds2 wouldnt stand on the buggy board and kept running away.the double buggy was a pain and did my back in,but it was my only option at the time.

annaspanna · 16/09/2006 21:09

Well i am so grateful for all the advise. I am sort of swaying towards a double buggy now. And i was dead against it.Just because i know what I'm like & i may very well get hot & stressed carrying a baby in whatever contraption on my person. Also would get irritated by kicking my feet off a buggy board. I So didn't want to get a double but saw a really good tandem maclaren. Might look on e-bay. Nothing at the car boot last week.

I'm still not 100% decided yet tho. DS is such a good walker. Been at it since 7 months old & can walk miles. On the other hand i think he may get jealous as CAT64 found with her lo.

My current debate is whether to get first born into a bed or keep in the cot!!! Thats another thread...

There is a new design out with a front seat and on the back is a place for another child to stand or sit. It is so perfect. THe older child can stand and look around while you stroll or sit when they are tired (and can be strapped into the seat). I love mine.

annaspanna · 17/09/2006 19:47

Sounds ideal christie1. What make /type is it?

ok, now your going to kill me, as I am not sure it is available in the UK, its called the joovy caboose but surely it must be over there.

eidsvold · 18/09/2006 04:08

I had another alternative - my 3 wheeler buggy took a child seat so when I just had dd2 - I could use the buggy - when I had dd1 and dd2 - had the child seat. It attached to the buggy we already had. See if I can find a link. Am going to get it out for no3 and dd2 - cause whilst she likes to walk - easier to put her in the seat than try and keep an eye on her.

oops sorry for the double post.

annapea · 18/09/2006 16:45

Hi annaspanna. Have you tried www.freecycle.org. I am hooked - it's a free recycling site for unwanted stuff and there are always ads on there for buggies and other stuff.

suburbanjellybrain · 18/09/2006 16:57

20m gap between my 2 and ds can't be trusted to stay beside me near roads and in busy areas though he is a good walker. So i got a tandem buggy jane three wheeler - i have found it v useful but check weight restriction for your older child. Def try 2nd hand as you won't be using double for that long. Think about the type of trips you make as i find using my wilkinet carrier for baby and ds in buggy v useful for public transport if i am on my own and there are lots of stairs involved (still difficult).
