Can't believe it, DS1 (6) was playing Angry Birds Go and came flying in to tell me he was really sorry but he has just bought 70 pounds worth of crystals?!

I had the settings set to ask for password every time but he says that nothing came up just went through.
He is distraught and I believe him, has anyone has any experience of getting money back from apple, I've heard it happens but don't know how to go about it. Feeling a bit sick now.ShockHmm

I've read quite a few cases of where parents have got money back but don't know whether they've cracked down on it now. Phone up and ask.

missmash · 13/07/2014 15:35

I'm sure he doesn't, he is in pieces and wants to give me the money out of his account.

My password is strong and I'm sure he wouldn't be able to get it all although he knows part of it! I've looked on the apple website but it is so full of information I can't find anything about unintentional purchases.

Look like I'll have to swallow it but it's DS2 birthday next week so will be bread and water this week.Confused

My dd10 did this we hadn't put security settings on iPad , she thought it was like her Ds and you could get coins ,apple were brilliant got it all back within days lessons learned it was about £445 the bank rang us thank god

bobsleighteam · 13/07/2014 15:41

my son did the exact same thing. £70 on a superhero app. I emailed apple and they were really helpful and understanding. I got my money refunded straight away.

Manda472 · 13/07/2014 15:45

Yes I would definitely call apple, I know someone who got a refund from them. It's not the same company but a month ago my son did this on the Xbox and spent £65 in about 10mins. I had stupidly left my PayPal details in, and only realised because I started getting emails. I called Microsoft in a total state of panic and they were great. They refunded it all there and then, but I was told it was once in a lifetime.
Call them, I would

Lollyheart · 13/07/2014 15:49

You should get it back, someone I know bought £1300 worth of thing for his games over a couple of weeks before anyone informed his parent, thankfully they got a full refund .

Thanks for the hope!! Just trying to find the right place to get help from the Apple website, seems very long winded but I'm sure I'll get there.
Will keep you posted. DS has just said, " anyway, it's not a big problem you told me all you need is love" !!!!! Time for a rethink on that one I think!!!

[email protected] Thats the email address I used to contact them when it happened to us.

chesterberry · 13/07/2014 15:59

Did he definitely buy the crystals? I accidentally clicked on the £70 coins on a game I was playing and was terrified thinking it had gone through, but it hadn't asked for my password and actually nothing went through. I'd check the email address linked to your apple account to see if it went through. If it did then hopefully apple will be able to refund the money.

Had you put your password in for anything within the last 15 minutes? Once you've put your password in to make a purchase on an iPad you can then buy anything without putting in the password again for the next 15 minutes.

To avoid it happening again you can restrict in-app purchases. Go to settings >> restrictions (you'll then have to put in your passcode) and then you can turn off in-app purchases which means if your child tries to purchase anything it won't work.

Hope you manage to get a refund - good luck :)

sorry *[email protected] is the correct email.

todayisnottheday · 13/07/2014 16:03

Did you buy anything yourself? I noticed the other day that some settings mean you put your password in once and then can buy things without the password for the next 30 minutes or something. Definitely email them though, worst they can say is no!

missmash · 14/07/2014 11:08

That's what happened, I had downloaded a free app and a box popped up which I thought was asking me to strengthen the security what it actually did was let you have a 15 minute window where it is possible to buy apps or in app purchases without requesting a password!

Security settings now at full strength, DS1 very sorry and offering to pay me out of his bank account!

I have contacted apple, you need to go through ITunes and they have logged my case, should have money back in 5 days! Very very lucky.Smile

Yes I think those pop ups are more trouble than they save. It would be good to have a setting that turns off the option altogether. Still, it's great that you are able to get the money back! Thank goodness they seem to be pretty reasonable about that!
