Wet nappy bags - please help!

Hi. I'm using reusable nappies for my daughter. That's all fine - except for the 'waterproof' nappy bags, which sadly have turned out to be not entirely waterproof and quite smelly! Can anyone recommend a brand that contains moisture and smell? This is for use in the nappy bin (so want ones that hold several nappies) for the couple of days between washes. Thanks Smile

I just put nappies straight into a nappy bin - I didn't put them in any kind of bag inside it. I know some people use a mesh bag in the nappy bin so they can lift it straight into the washing machine.

How old is your DC and what kind of poo are they producing?

PinkSquash · 12/07/2014 11:22

I used mesh wash bag for the pail and a zipped bag from BumDeal nappies.

My Little Patch does good waterproof bags too.

I just used a mesh bag in bin and then while bag and nappies into machine. Isn't it awkward having wet bag in a bin? Surely the bin blocks the smell, or wash more frequently

I don't think you need a wet bag in the bin itself? Just a mesh bag? I put a couple of drops of essential oil in each time I empty the bin after I've given it a bit of a clean so it stays smelling nice, and the mesh bag gets washed with the contents.

Darksideofthemoon88 · 12/07/2014 17:25

Umm no, Artandco Confused - why would it be? They're washed every 2-3 days; just DP complains of the smell when he opens the bin.

If you use mesh liners, don't they drip everywhere when you're lifting them into washing machine?

You'll have a smell when you open the wetbag tbh
It's a case of rinse, breathe in and hold nose during the whole thing.

I tucked the pail under the washing machine and lifted it in so there wasn't any drips. The odd one escaped but is easily cleaned up.

Artandco · 12/07/2014 17:32

No, they are dry pailed so not wet enough to drip. We only tip poo out, and in bucket.

Either way you still have to open bag Each time to smell surely. The mesh you don't have to empty bag which creates more smell, just bag out, whole bag in machine

AntoinetteCosway · 12/07/2014 18:00

Hardly any drops as we dry pail. Occasionally a tiny bit of dampness from wipes that were a bit wetter but barely. Wet pailing makes the whole experience a lot smellier in my experience.

MirandaWest · 12/07/2014 19:54

I used to dry pail as well.

Darksideofthemoon88 · 13/07/2014 09:01

What do you mean by wet pailing V dry pailing?

OP posts:
SweetTeaVodka · 13/07/2014 09:13

Dry pailing is basically just tipping poo down the toilet (unless it is new baby breastfeeding poo) then bunging nappy straight into bucket or bag which is dry (no solution in bucket). Therefore nothing to drip!

Wer pailing is where the bucket contains a solution of something like Nappisan that the nappies marinade in until washing.

Most manufacturers and suppliers recommended dry pailing in my experience.

Darksideofthemoon88 · 13/07/2014 16:56

Oh I see. I dry-pail then - but some of the liners are pretty sodden...

Try wrapping the nappy so all the liners and main wet part is inside the rest of nappy in the bin

callamia · 13/07/2014 17:05

I only have a mesh bag in the bucket, and I hadn't noticed a smell. I wonder if your nappies are a bit ammonia-y, and could with a super hot wash, or whether you could use some essential oil in the bucket? I wash my nappies with a little drop of lavender and tea tree oil, and it's usually that you can smell.

Darksideofthemoon88 · 13/07/2014 17:14

Would I then have to separate them all before washing, Art?

Callamia: Is it safe for baby's skin if you've washed them with a bit of tea tree?

No. Just wrap loosely so liners inside, but not fixed close. Get x2 mesh bags and use then you can just take while mesh bag out and put in machine without really touching nappies at all. Just make sure you are washing before full full so there is enough space in machine for them to move about and open/ be cleaned properly

We would wash around 10-12 nappies at a time ( all in one type). So as newborn daily, then every 2 days as older.

One tip is once they are old enough to sit up put on toilet after bath/ before new nappy if possible as they will wee so nappies then not sodden so quick or as much. Plus makes potty training quicker and earlier so not washing nappies as long!

AntoinetteCosway · 13/07/2014 17:23

I fold the nappy tabs down and then roll the nappies up with the liners and boosters inside before dropping into the bucket-then when emptying them into the machine they just unroll and there's no need to touch them too much.
