DS using potty regularly - now what??

My DS is two on Halloween and I have been doing a bit of Elimination Communication with him since he was 14 months, so he has been used to the potty for ages.
In the past month he has been using the potty most of the time, putting himself on and then coming and getting us if we aren't in the room, so we can put the contents down the loo. I'm not sure how reliable he would be about telling me he needed the potty/loo when out if we went down the pants only route. He isn't a great talker - spends most of the day running around making train and car noises, but he can tell me poop and peep when he has done one.
He is nakeybums during the day at home so he doesn't have to pull down a nappy, but I put a nappy on for going out or nighttime, not naps. Oh, and he knows that the potty is emptied down the loo and has comically attempted to lift the seat and get on, but 'I don't think so'. He is in no way tall enough to get on.
So what next? Should I buy a step and toilet thingy, as he sometimes likes to sit on the potty for a while, I don't want to have to suspend him over the loo for ten minutes when he can sit there himself. Or is that not going to happen at his age. He isn't tall, kind of average I think or just below?
He is cloth nappied and I was thinking I could buy him some cloth pull-ups so he could practice pulling pants up and down, but with the absorbency to prevent a soggy floor?
Any suggestions would be of interest.
Thank you all.

Would you take a potty out with you, or wait until your baby could use the loo??

Personally I would take a potty out with you and see how it goes. DD was trained at just 2 (so a month older) and we started off taking the potty out. Now we rarely bother and I just lift her onto the toilet when we are out somewhere. she is now 2.3.

DD was potty trained at 24 months. I took a small cheap potty out with us for a while, just had it in a carrier under the pushchair, with an antibacterial spray/wipe for cleaning it after use. We then went out and bought a travel potty, but would say that they are not ideal is sitting on for any length of time.

When you do get him in pants, go for big baggy ones - a size bigger than you would buy for the rest of his clothes. Makes them far easier to pull up and down.

TBH I would go for cold turkey. DD was in disposables and pull ups are not recommended for PTing children. I can't imagine that that isn't any different for cloth.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm a bit dubious about taking a potty out, I just can't imagine ds working out that there is a potty in the pram and stopping me as I wheel him along, then asking to use it. By the time I work out what he wants and get the potty out and his pants off, he would probably have done it.
Did you stop anywhere to use it, or only use it in a loo or changing room?
The whole going out thing is really putting me off
I suppose I could just put him on the potty every hour.
I might just stay in until he's five then he can go by himself.
I used to always get locked in loos when I was little - I wonder if it's genetic?
