Has anyone used amber necklaces/bracelets etc for teething babies? Do they work? Are they safe? Where would you buy them? Any info greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I'm not sure what amber bracelets are so sorry if I can't answer but I swear by biccie pegs. You can get at most chemists I think.

I think they are a load of .... But I'm very cynical.

They don't work, in the sense that there is no possibility of the amber having any effect on your baby through it being placed on their skin. If they seem to work to some parents, this is due to the placebo effect.

The safety aspect is a decision only you can make. There is a choking and strangulation risk from putting any kind of bracelet or necklace on your baby. These types of jewellery for babies should be made so that they snap if baby gets caught up. However that doesn't prevent the choking risk, although most are made so that the individual beads don't come loose if it breaks. Still there would be a choking risk of a string of beads.

I wouldn't risk putting a necklace on my baby. Some people put them on an ankle instead, but even then I wouldn't leave it on a baby when they were asleep. It's an unnecessary risk for something that is fundamentally decorative.

Totally agree with culture. I think you'd be better spending the £20 on a nice necklace for yourself as a treat for having a teething baby! Have a read of this;

I got an anklet from a friend. Works great, way less drool and fussy baby :)

Out of interest bshrd363, how do you think that it works?

If amber has such an immediate analgesic effect, I'm curious as to why it isn't being prescribed by GPs for adult pain relief? Or being regulated as a medicine?

NickyEds · 10/07/2014 20:55

bshrd363Does your baby chew on it like a teether?

Strangulation and choking hazard, that's all they are. Oh and they look pretty.
