Help with washing new nappies

Sure this sounds like a stupid question but I have just bought some new washable nappies for the first time and the instructions say to wash them 2-3 times before using them. Do I need to dry them in between washes or just do 3 washes in a row?

Was going to ask the same question - thanks! Also wondered about wraps - should I wash them with the nappies, and if so, how many times?
Someone said some white vinegar in the rinsing water for nappies as opposed to conditioner....would that be ok with wraps too?
Feel as clueless about real nappies as I did about having a baby last time round...

I put the wraps in with the nappies and use white vinegar. I think its ok - never actually thought about it!

You don't need to prewash the wraps. Prewashing the nappies does something to make them more absorbent.

when you're washing the nappies only use HALF the amount of detergent that you normally would- honestly. If you use the full amount, it will build up in the nappies and cause them to smell. Vinegar in the final rinse will keep the pile soft, and won't make your baby smell like a fish supper !

what do you do with the viniger, is it where fabric conditioner goes? how much?

Flamesparrow · 10/09/2006 20:17

I only use about 1/4 powder amount. Vinegar in softner bit, a large splash (about a tablespoon?). Wraps - I do still wash once before use to get any manufacturing chemicals off.

just normal malt vinigar?

hollyhobbie · 10/09/2006 21:02

Not malt vinegar! White vinegar.
I also soak the nappies before a wash in water with a few drops of teatree oil (I think it disinfects them) and lavender oil (smells nice).

cheers for all the advise!

Just another few question - if you use the vinegar in the final rinse, do you wait to add it? What if you miss the 'right time'? Does that mean you dont need to soak?

Put it in the conditioner tray bit. I usually add a couple of drops of lavender oil too.

You lot are stars, thanks for all the info/advice.
Rather tempted to use a bit of nice balsamic tho'

nappyaddict · 11/09/2006 21:46

i soak my nappies in water with tea tree, lavender and white wine vinegar and i also add the same in the conditioner drawer when i wash the nappies and wraps. however if you have coloured nappies or wraps don't use tea tree or lavender as it affects the colour.
i do not soak my wraps though as someone told me this makes them not last as long or something.
