WWYD re Full/Part time OU degree?

I currently unsure as to whether to study two 60 credit modules at Level 2 in October.

I have a 13 month year old and I work 16 hours across two days a week. I am also involved in some community work as well. though this is still in its infancy.

I have until Dec 2017 to finish my degree under the transitional fees and I have just finished first year (120 credits).

If I stay with part time study over four years I will not finish my degree in time and last 60 credit module will not be under transitional fees.

I would also like DC2 at some point as well!

I am studying towards an English Lit. degree and I am asking in my situation would you stay with part time study or go "full time" at any point?

(Sorry its long just thought I'd give all the info.)

Do all the modules have the same start date? Are there any options where you could start one module in October and one in February so that you are taking 2 in one year but not totally overlapping?

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 06/07/2014 16:19

Thanks for the reply Crafty.

On the website it is just showing all the modules as starting this Oct. But I am going to ring up tomorrow morning and check, as this could be a solution.

Yes I would absolutely do it. I did it working two days with a baby too. It was not easy but it was doable and I have finished now.

Do it with the level 2s and not the level 3s though.

Two units is a lot of work but as op said they are at level 2 rather than level 3 plus the fact you have a lot going on in your life however if you believe you can do it than you probably will

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 07/07/2014 09:04

JustJuan Did you manage to have any sort of life while doing them both or where you just in the books non-stop?

Well I did have to work lots but I did the past two years overlapping a level 2 and 3 together. My marks are lower for it I think but hopefully I pulled it off. I had June-oct off each year and then still did my normal stuff but worked late each night. I am quite efficient I suppose as I didn't ever spend nearly as much time as they recommend (32 hours for 2x 60 pointers).

I'll report back again when my results come through Wink

Crafty I've checked today all the modules I want to do start in October. Sad

It is now an all or nothing situation. I feel my decision now will have ramifications for the whole family. I am so unsure!

I did two 60 point units that crossed over in Feb one year. So Oct to Feb 60 units Feb to June 120 units then June to Oct 60. I worked full time and have two DC, so similar to you.

It was hard, really hard. But doable. They start in Oct, are there any materials you can get your hands on now? The courses I start in Oct have sample materials, so I'm working through those now.

I would rather compress level two and spend more time at level 3.

The OU are beginning to only start modules in October to tie in with other unis.
I've just applied to do 2 modules from October, my last two hopefully! I have a 5 month old but I don't work. I'm doing two modules now so that we can try for a second baby next year. I'm reading all the set books and recommended reading now so that I will be a little ahead Smile

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 11/07/2014 14:33

Thank you for all the replys. It has really helped me sort things out. I think I am going to go ahead and study the two modules and just put in the 9 months of hard work! Smile

As I am studying English Lit I am going start reading all my aey texts now!

Just go for it. Be super organised and strict with yourself. Also really talk to both your tutors from day 1, as soon as you get their details. If they know you are doing two modules they may even be able to help you rejig your dates for deadlines should you need it. It will be a crazy year but so worth it next year. Just keep thinking of your graduation.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you OP, I've almost finished a 30 credit module with the OU and I found very easy to fit in with real life, I work full time and have 2 kids, single mum. I didn't need to devote anywhere near the 12 hours a week they recommend you need.

So now I've got my confidence I'm thinking of doing 2 60 credit modules starting in October on the PPE degree... Does anyone know how much harder the 60 credit modules are in comparison to the 30's?

I started off doing Business but now want to change over to the PPE. Woud be great to get any feedback from anyone who has done this!
