Keeping to 16-20 deg in summertime!

Hello, I'm thinking ahead slightly here as our baby isn't due for another 6 weeks, but I've been reading the SIDS guidelines which says the temperature of the baby's room should be between 16-20 degrees.

The thermometer in the coolest room in the house is currently reading 25 degrees! So what do we do? Do we need fans, or a full on air conditioning system or something?!

I know it will be cooler at night, so hopefully it will slip back into the recommended range, but babies sleep during the day right?

Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? Or is this a big issue? What did others with summer born babies do?

As you may have guessed this is our first!

You just need to make sure little one is dressed correctly

There are lots of guides to layers online

Oh so it's that simple? Thanks I'll see what I can find.

If you're in the uk you just ride our the hot westher. Ours was born at te start if June last year, just before that lengthy heat wave hit. Last summer was not 'amazing' with a new born I have to say. Some nights she just slept in her nappy, or wrapped in one layer muslin. When it was very hot and she was little sometimes it was hard, as she was too hot but hated the bath (which would have cooled her down).

Sometime the days were more of a problem. Getting to a 2pm doctors appointment in 30 degree heat ain't fun. She hated the pram when little too, though possibly also because it was often so damn hot i there. Sometime at night we used a fan. I didn't worry about room temperature too much.

I think those SIDS guidelines are more about heated rooms and no over dressing. But then we co-slept too, so I'm not exact a follow the SIDS guidelines to the letter kind of a mum.

Bottom line, if its v hot, chances are your little one won't be sleeping anyway Grin

Good luck x

DTs room was consistently at 25 when they were born, we just couldn't get the temperature to go down, south facing room just sucked up the heat.

They had .5 tog bags and would sleep in a sleeveless vest or just a nappy. When it got really hot, nappy and no bag.

AnythingNotEverything · 04/07/2014 19:40

At 16-20 I'd be dressing the baby in a vest, babygrow and 2.5tog grobag or folded over (ie two layers) of cellular blanket. For every couple of degrees increase I remove a layer.

8 month old DD is sleeping in a short sleeved vest and a 1tog grobag and it's been about 22 degrees in her room each night this week.

At 25 degrees I'd probably have a newborn in a vest and sleeping under a muslin. You may find they sleep on you for the first month anyway ...

Yes same here 25 degrees in our room and baby is in short sleeves vest and 0.5 tog sleeping bag. At 20 degrees he was in vest, baby grow
And 2 celuar blankets

Wherehasmysleepgone · 05/07/2014 17:12

Its been consistently 25 or over in my 15 week olds room and he has been sleeping in just a short sleeve vest and then when its cooler in the morn I add a cellular blanket. We also had the fan on when it was really muggy just for piece of mind.
When the temp drops down I will put him in PJ's with a blanket.

I was so paranoid about the heat to begin with but I am getting used to it now Smile

I have never measured the temperature in a baby's room.

One more layer than I am comfortable in (as they are not moving around) And common sense.
