i am still a bit confused by real nappies. i am using junior joy nappy wraps with a mixture of terries (having no probs with folding) and pre-folds, but the wet keeps leaking through the wraps onto ds's clothes. what am i doing wrong?

so it's not the nappies or me then?

motherease here too and no leaks...

are you making sure all the nappy is inside the wrap? (sorry if that's obvious)

yes it just comes straight through the middle and sometimes after only an hour (or less) in them. I think i may have knackered the wraps! thanks for the tip

For flat nappies like yours you could try Bummis wraps they are very slim fitting and hold the prefold in place very well. You used to be able to buy them at Boots under the brand name 'cotton bottoms' - they were on sale for around £5 a wrap there, and on Ebay.
I have been using the size medium (15-30lbs) for the past 18 months with no leaks at all, and they still look like new. TBH I can't really see us ever using the size large.
I have heard of a few people complaining about the Junior Joy (Hester?) wraps. For a short term solution you could try washing them in wash with fabric conditioner and/or tumbling them on high for a short time - apparently that helps with the waterproofing.
You can buy waterproofing spray from camping shops and that might help if sprayed on the inner - try nikwax.
Oh and you shouldn't soak wraps in nappy soak such as nappisan or nappybright as it is bad for the waterproofing. Just in case you were thinking about it.
Hope you find a solution soon.

Hi, I have a leaking problem with my (large)2yr old dd. Every time she wees we have a leak when she sits down. Currently using double boosted bumbles with airflows (XL). I use minki huggles at night with no problems, but they are too bulky for daytime use under clothes! Any suggestions?

It sounds as if she is holding in her wee and then flooding the nappy, which can't absorb it fast enough. You could try using microfibre towels as they are quick at absorbing and can hold quite a lot, but you might still find adding them makes the nappy a bit bulky. I don't know what you are using at present, but a combination of hemp and microfibre is good with the microfibre cloth(s) wrapped around the hemp booster. The microfibre should grab the wee and the hemp, which takes longer to absorb, can lock in the wee.
Another thing to watch is the fleece is ok and not repelling, as creams and so on can easily build up on these and stop urine passing through properly. The only solution is to strip them by washing repeatedly at a high temp and curtailing the use of nappy cream. I think you can get away with cream if you use a paper liner to keep it off the fleece, but I'm not sure if it affects the performance of the paper liner itself?
If she is holding her wee that long, then she might be ready to have the potty introduced, if you haven't already.
I found after naps and sleep, after meals/bath were good times to 'catch' something with my DS. That should give the nappy less to absorb in between potty sessions.

Thanks Maisiemog, We don't use creams and have been using microfibre boosters. I think we'll just have to take the plunge and try potties! I'll definately try your technique, don't think I have the courage to go cold turkey! Thanks again for your help.

Just another suggestion to the mix...Next size up of wrap just solved our leaking problem. Initially I was blaming dh for putting them on wrong until I got the problem.

I knew dd was coming up for the next sized wrap, but was shocked at the difference! Am using motherease rikki wraps and was using bambino mio lite wraps. They are pretty much the same though.

Junior Joy wraps have a terrible reputation (though have been ok on my 5yo at night, but she doesn't flood 'em). Try anything else.

nappyaddict · 13/09/2006 14:32

get motherease rikki wraps - these are the best fitting wraps around as they are aplix (poppers aren't as well fitting) and i've never had any leaks with them.

sparrowlegs · 14/09/2006 22:36

thanks for all the tips.gonna shop around!!

I love proraps. They are cheap and contained my dd's explosive and very frequent diarrhoea, and you can use them with prefolds.

Peanutgant · 16/09/2006 20:34

Motherease, motherease and motherease Best wraps around, they don't 'wick' like most of the other ones. Also got some nature babies too and they are fine.
