Unexpected low dissertation marks

My son has just received his mark back for his undergraduate dissertation; it was in the low 50s. Up until now coursework marks have been in the region of mid 60s to 70s. Prior to the dissertation my son questioned an earlier mark related to piece of work he had submitted with the same supervisor who was not happy at all. The supervisor's observations proved to be incorrect but no amendments were made to the original mark. There was an immediate paradigm shift in the relationship, and my son worked very hard to bring the supervisor 'back on board'. He believed that wounds had healed as the supervisor began giving him really good feedback about the quality of his work, and efforts. He was given help and reviews contained what appeared to be good pointers to include in the work. A final draft was reviewed and some minor amendments were recommended with wording, and inclusion of particular appendices.

My son was devastated when he read through comments made about the dissertation....there were major elements missing that severely effected his mark. Inclusions and amendments that his supervisor had recommended had been penalised not only by the second marker, but by the supervisor.....Marks and comments related to his attitude, performance etc. read like a character assassination. My son didn't sleep for three days and hardly ate; he's a genuinely lovely guy, certainly non-confrontational and this was the last straw....

The university doesn't want to know and has just said 'appeal'....what a complete nightmare. Anyone have any idea on how to fight an appeal about the quality of the supervision...

That must be so frustrating. On a much less important note, DD has just had an assignment back (2nd yr.) which great comments but a mark in the low 60s. She said that there is nothing she can do about it! One lecturer says do it this way, and another says do it another. So unfair. Surely personal comments are totally unprofessional.

I hope someone comes along with experience on how to get a genuine review made of this piece of work, and the advice he was given.

I know how upset I would be in your shoes Welshcakes Thanks

Thank you so much...so need to vent....

What is the appeal process? Does it go beyond the department, or is it dealt with by his tutors? Presumably he's got nothing to loose (other than becoming hung up on it to an unhealthy extent!), so I wonder if it might be worth approaching the Chancellor of the uni or something, if he gets no joy?

Hello ajandjjmum....We've found grounds to appeal via the university. This is a written appeal where we supply evidence as support. My son has been advised to make a formal complaint about the supervisor first as if this is upheld it will bolster the appeal. ....

It's a bit frightening, as no one wants to upset the apple-cart....

It's not through his tutors, but through an appeals board I understand...

But he has his marks, so they cannot now be affected negatively (presumably) - I suppose the only issue might be if he needs a reference, but then he wouldn't go to 'Mr Horrible Tutor' anyway.

Has he checked that he will be ok timewise to submit a written appeal after the formal complaint? I just wondered if it had to be within a certain time of the results being given.

I really wish him well with this - and you know, he'll learn from it and come out of it stronger. I know it doesn't feel like it at the time though!

Yes, there is a time limit of 14 days to send in the appeal. We send in both together, and they deal with the complaint first...Where the marks are concerned, really don't know.....
