Looking for Industrial Strength Nit Shampoo!

So, I've done Hedrin, Lyclear, conditioner by the gallon with the Nitty Gritty, spray in deterrent and STILL the little buggers come!!!

I just get the feeling that some of the lotions on the market aren't as efficient / chemical as they used to be.

I read somewhere that Hedrin kills the lice but not the nits/eggs.

I need something that will kill off both!

DD has had the little blighters on and off since Easter Sad

Same here I had to use Hedrin again on DD last night. The time and money I've spent on trying to kill them off/remove them I just don't want to think about Sad

BaconAndAvocado · 01/07/2014 21:29

Although I don't really like the idea of using strong chemicals on my DCs scalps I just want something that bloody does what it should!

DD's hair must be the best conditioned barnet in the land for all the combing through I've been doing!

Hedrin Once is supposed to kill both. I'm planning to stock up so I can try that if we get another infestation. My head's itching now at the very thought

Is it possible that your dd is getting reinfected by other children in her class whose parents are not so fastidious about nits? Are you tying her hair back? Plaits clipped to top of head are a good preventative measure.

BaconAndAvocado · 01/07/2014 21:51

jimbob possibly a child re-infesting, usually plait or pony tail her hair.

Hadn't heard of the plaits on the head idea!

Have used Hedrin before but found it incredibly difficult to wags out! So greasy. But if it's supposed to kill both then maybe I'll try it again!

I honestly don't think you need chemicals just loads of cheap conditioner and spend some time combing through.

BaconAndAvocado · 01/07/2014 22:00

sonly believe me I have conditioned and combed for England! I just want to nuke the bastards now!

I have had this problem this eve, apparently my dd friends at school have had the little blighters for 2 weeks! I am not sure how true this is as they are 6yrs old Smile
I think they should produce a 'frontline' type product for kids then there wouldn't be an issue...... Grin

PermaLice · 01/07/2014 22:10

Unfortunate, there are resistant lice. It's not that products are weaker, it's the lice that have changed.

You could try one of the smothering type treatments (eg Full Marks, but leaves hair seriously greasy). Otherwise it's thorough combing at least every other day for the length of their reproductive cycle (approx 17 days, so 3 weeks to be on the safer side).

Reinfection is a possibility so a big blitz of every family head at start of school holidays might be good.

BaconAndAvocado · 01/07/2014 22:23

perma that makes sense but is very very scary! These lice are indestructible!

puddingchef that could very well be true!

Will carry on conditioning and combing, conditioning and combing, conditioning and.............aghhhhhhhhh!

I caught them off my DCs and spent one Christmas eve sitting in freezing cold bath water combing and combing.

PajamaQueen · 02/07/2014 10:43

I stick a couple of drops of tea tree oil in the shampoo we use and it does help keep the infestation at bay (although it's not bullet proof obviously) I read somewhere the other day about using lysterine. If I can find the link I'll post it up.

If we do have an infestation we use Full Marks. However, I find it a bitch getting it out of your hair because it makes it so greasy - even after washing.

bendywillow · 02/07/2014 21:45

We suffered 3 months of returning, industrial-strength nits with DS8, which he picked up on holiday in a tropical country. Nothing shifted them. We sprayed, we combed (every single, bloody night), we resprayed - we tried every different brand of chemical, along with smothering with conditioner and all the usual tactics. The chemist assistant loved me - every time I walked in the door you could see the pound signs flashing in her eyes (jokes, she was actually very helpful). In the end, do you wanna know what killed these bastard nits? My hair straighteners. Seriously, I fried the little f**kers to death and they've not been back since.

I figured it out because on holiday I was getting cross infected with nits from DS and when we got home, I seemed to be magically cured. Of course, going back to work I started using my straighteners again regularly and I thought it was worth trying on DS. It worked. I almost cried with relief. He was not impressed by his new look, but it was worth every pout from him.

bendywillow · 02/07/2014 21:46

Sorry about the strong language. You can all see now how much I hate nits. One of the only issues in life to evoke pure, evil, hatred in me.

Beenspotted · 03/07/2014 18:26

The better treatments I've used are the Nitty Gritty treatment to go with the comb, or something called x-it. Expensive, but effective. You then need to be disciplined about combing twice a week to check and having hair tied up at school.

BaconAndAvocado · 03/07/2014 19:46

bendy Grin at miracle hair straighteners. I will definitely give them a whirl!

No need to apologise for strong language, they're the bane of my life at the moment!

Will look into x-it, not heard of that one.

Conditioner and combing with a nit comb.

BaconAndAvocado · 05/08/2014 23:05

Well, after roughly 3 months of treating the buggers on and off it was good old-fashioned Full Marks lotion that seemed to obliterate the cycle.

I used it once, left it on 10 minutes longer than stated (very helpful pharmacist recommended this) and then re-treated 7 days later, with 1 or 2 conditioning and combing routines in between.

Soooooo pleased it's all over, until September anyway Smile
