Hi all,
Im due to start a degree in Social Work this coming September after completing an access to social sciences course.
I am a lone parent with a 21 month old dd with fantastic family support.

Here's the thing:
I wanted to do midwifery.
I applied for access to health and got in but the tutor terrified me so much about 'not being likely to get in at university' that I swapped to social sciences.
When I did my personal statement I wanted to apply for midwifery and social work but was advised to apply just for social work.
So I did.
I got in.

The more time goes on the more I'm really not sure and wish id applied for midwifery.

Has anyone else felt this way?

No but if you feel that way already, then is it better to turn down the place and reapply for midwifery? Midwifery is extremely competitive though so you could spent some time in the interim getting work experience and I know the local uni to me does a February intake as well so you might not have to wait a full year. Don't make do as it is hard work doing a degree in your chosen subject, never mind one that you aren't sure about. Midwives have to work antisocial shifts so I hope your family support would make that possible for you.

They would daisy. Thank you for your support Smile

Good luck with your decision, we are a long time working so you need to do something you love if you possibly can!

Absolutely no point in embarking on a degree you don't want to do. If you are sure you want to do midwifery then reapply. Yes it is competitive but if you want to do it then what have you got to lose? If you never apply then you won't get in that's for certain!

I can try and change once ive started my social work degree with the universities that take a February intake.
I have been advised to try and do a short course in human biology to support this and try and do a few more mornings shadowing a midwife.
I've no idea where to start regarding a human biology course that doesn't cost a massive amount.

I doubt a change in year will be possible but call admissions at your university and ask them, they are usually very helpful. We have a March intake as well as September but what the uni does is you all apply as though for September, they allocate places (40) and then split into 2 cohorts of 20 so there isn't an application period. Of course occasionally a space becomes available and at times they fill a March intake place from the next year's lot of applicants if someone has dropped out and we have a girl with us who transferred from a different university.

Human biology is a good idea, you need a good grounding in normal physiology so you can understand the changes in pregnancy. Those of us without a good background in biology have struggled a bit in my cohort. It isn't a prerequisite for our university though. Is there a college near you that offers GCSEs of something as an evening class?

About to graduate and wishing I'd done a different course.

Don't start SW if you don't have your heart in it. Its hard enough when you heart is/
