Daughter's come back from nursery looking awful

My one-year-old has had her first full day at nursery today. I expected her to be exhausted but she looked horrific when my husband brought her in: red streaming slitty eyes, red nose, just awful. Is this normal?

I can't help but think WTF but appreciate I'm probably just being paranoid as it's her first day there. My husband said he asked the nursery nurse about it and she said she'd had a little cry as she was tired.

She came home with a glitter painting with blobs of glue still wet on it. I'm wondering if the glitter and glue got in her eyes? Or she cried more then just a 'little'? Maybe she didn't get a proper nap? But they said she napped for 2 hours.

Shall I ask about it when I drop her off on Thurs or is this just par for the course when a child first goes to nursery, the exhaustion makes them look wrecked?

It's my birthday too today so even more upsetting. Silly me!

Could she have hayfever? Can you ask her if she's been upset at all or if she had fun?

youbethemummylion · 24/06/2014 18:27

Could it be hayfever and just a coincidence?

Wolfiefan · 24/06/2014 18:29

Did they apply sun cream? Could it be a reaction?

Did she have outside time or the windows open, sounds like hay fever. My dd has had if for years and it affects her really badly. Next time she goes give her some piriton

BuzzardBird · 24/06/2014 18:29

Definitely ask, you shouldn't have to worry.

It does sound like she has had an allergic reaction to something though. I would hate to think she looked like that because they had let her cry for a long time. Did she have a settling in period when you were there?

Will she be able to tell you what her day was like?

Picturesinthefirelight · 24/06/2014 18:32

As a hay fever sufferer & mum to a gay fever suffering dd is say that sounds like some kind if allergic reaction.

OwlCapone · 24/06/2014 18:35

I would think hay fever.

DS1 didn't suffer from it until he started at Primary and it was mostly confined to when he was at the school. We think it's tree pollen that affects him the most. It came as a big surprise when he first had problems.

Pictures, you really need to 'preview' message Grin

I'd ask - it sounds odd to me. Did you do settling in? How was she then, when you left for shorter periods?

TrixieLox · 24/06/2014 18:40

Yes, she had outdoor. Maybe it's hay fever. Or reaction to the glue. I'll ask Thursday. She can't tell me anything as she's just turned one so not much vocab beyond mamma, dadda, bye and roaring like a lion! She does seem happy enough though, am feeding her now and putting her to bed a bit earlier.

:o at typo

TrixieLox · 24/06/2014 18:42

Oh, and yes, did settling in, but only two 1 hour sessions. She seemed very happy but tired after. Nursery has a great rep and work colleague sing its praises. I'm surprised they didn't actively bring it up though, she clearly looked terrible.

Gay fever? The Daily Mail haven't said anything...?

fledermaus · 24/06/2014 18:43

I think your DH needs to question the staff a bit more closely. This is one thing that used to wind me up about DP collecting from nursery - he would never ask any questions!

TrixieLox · 24/06/2014 18:43

Ha ha,great typo Pictures!

Oops. I'm on my phone. I m dreadful at typing on it & auto correct too.

Oh dear gay fever (sounds like something my grandmother would have said)

scarletforya · 24/06/2014 19:27

Hah haa @Gay fever! Grin

Bettercallsaul1 · 24/06/2014 23:51

Sounds like the play Noel Coward would like to have written!

grumpalumpgrumped · 26/06/2014 21:50

Did you supply your own suncream or did they use their own. Sound like suncream in the eyes, or maybe sweat etc.

A good nursery will be happy to discuss your worries with you.

My instant thought would be lots of crying - I would call them and probe further although it's often hard to get a straight answer. Hope she slept well.

TrixieLox · 28/06/2014 20:15

Just an update: I spoke to nursery nurse when I dropped her off Thursday and she agreed it was probably glitter from the painting plus fact she has a bad cold. She'll keep an eye on her. When I picked her up after, she was fine. Still not satisfied with how they didn't bring it up when hubby picked her up as my little girl clearly looked awful but will just see how things go. I personally prefer to know every little thing and would've felt better if they'd brought it up when hubby picked her up, even if they didn't really know why she'd reacted.

Thanks for the update. Thinking about it, if she was really unhappy there, I'd've thought she'd get extra clingy with you at home.
But I agree with you - I like to know every little thing too so I think it would've been better if they'd mentioned it at pick up.
Happy belated birthday, by the way!
