Should I expect chickenpox?

There's an outdoor paddling pool in out local park and it's frequented by loads of local kids. DS is almost 20 months and at the moment we're there every day and he frequently drinks the water - it's hard to stop him because he doesn't understand a water bottle for drinking from and a water toys are different things!

Anyway! There was a kid there today with chicken pox. He was in the water and DS was stroking him before I'd clocked what the red spots were. They were white in the middle but looked scabby, not fresh. I haven't experienced chicken pox yet so I've no idea how contagious he would still be - is scabby the non-contagious part or should I expect DS to break out with it soon? I can't imagine any parent would take their contagious kid to a public paddling pool, a place already basically a mixing pot of other germs and wee and stuff! Right?

they are no longer contagious once they have scabbed over
