Had a reading list from Uni come through today, think I am going to have to sell one of my kidneys or something.

Reading list comes to just under £100 so far.. even if i buy 2nd hand off Amazon with P&p is still works out at about £50.

this uni lark is stressful already and i have'nt even started yet.

Also check out ebay for books

gigglinggoblin · 06/09/2006 20:26

if its anything like my course you will need hardly any of them, and if you are fast you can get to the library before everyone else and get them for free. i used to wander round the library for half an hour and use a computer or something so my book wasnt first on the list when people wanted to recall one cos they were too slow

tiredemma · 06/09/2006 20:27

I did but most for sale are older editions.

Just going to have to plead poverty to my dad and ask him to donate funds to a poor students book fund.

nutcracker · 06/09/2006 20:30

Oh no emma, if you wan to email me the list so I can keep an eye out on ebay or anything then feel free.

tiredemma · 06/09/2006 20:31

Ive given up on student finance- bloody waste of time, if I get any joy from them it will be a miracle. Thank god I dont have to pay tuition fees, but feel for those that do because student finance are complete piss takers.

see if you can find these (CHEAP THOUGH!!!)

  • Foundation studies for nursing- Using enquiry based Learning (2003)- Grandis, et al.

  • Nursing practice and Health care- (2003) - Hinchliffe et al.

  • foundations in Nursing and Health care Profiles and portfolios of evidence. (2003) Pearce. R.

  • Thinking Nursing- (2003) mason. t.

There is another one but I have already found it.

If you can find them Em - ill save them for you - ( do you want these other books by the way?)!!

Has your university wevsite got somewhere where students can sell on their old books - ours have and mostly they sell them for pittance so you can save quite a lot. Ours do it through the students union I think.

I spend at least £100 a year on books and it is ridiculous. One we were told to get one year was £80 I didn't get it cos thought it was ridiculous (and it was only a tiny book too!). A couple of people did though and we never bloody used it - they were so angry it was unbelievable. It was taken off the list the next year .

tiredemma · 06/09/2006 20:40

hadnt thought of that- Ill see if there is anything on there now.

Hmm non of them are on Ebay which is not very helpful is it.

I do still want your books by the way but you must let me pay you for them, it can go towards your new books.

jofeb04 · 06/09/2006 21:23

Just to say ask in your local libruary. I needed a book for last term, couldnt afford to buy it (it was just a local course in the village!), but is the equivilent to first year degree.
The local libruary didn't have it, but they ordered it in from somewhere else.

HTH

Blondilocks · 06/09/2006 21:36

Where I went to uni the bookshop in the union bought back second hand books & then sold them on again so may be worth checking those.

Also keep looking @ ebay. Also does it matter if it is a year out of date? (I guess it depends if laws etc are involved).

I got lots from the library - if you have a reservation system that seemed to work pretty well (just need to be organised before deadlines)

Smurfgirl · 06/09/2006 21:45

So far for my course I have bought 2 books. Some of them they said we had to have but have actually never needed, and some of them I borrowed from the library.

I would definately wait until you start and get the vibe for what books you actually need. Some lecturers say that x book is on the list but you really need y or you don't need any at all.

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 06/09/2006 22:08

I get my local town library to order in any I can (about a quid a shot, can do over the net and they don't mind). Then I buy just one or two of the core texts, especially anything by mt lecturers as they seem to basically have the lecture in, much easier LOL! I think I spent about £85 last year.

ANd don't forget the list is for a year, so you don't need all from day one anyway.

lalibela · 27/09/2006 17:48

abebooks.co.uk sometimes has a wider and cheaper secondhand selection than amazon.

I found that sometimes it was worth being cheeky and asking my lecturer if I could borrow their copy of a text that was expensive and not available in the uni library. Plus they or the course administrator can also put out an e-mail to their students from last year asking if anyone wants to sell on their textbooks.
