My DS is 19 months now & will be about 2.2 when new baby due in March. Should i attempt to potty train soon? He knows when he's done wee/poo. Talk well & gets the gist of what toilet is for etc. & is getting predicable for poo. Not sure about wee? Any suggestions??

after IMO
do it in summer as well much easier, it is also easier the later you leave it and also some toilet trained kids can regress when a baby is born.

my ds was 2.2yrs when baby was born and decided when she was 2wks old he didnt want to wear nappies like the baby. Before that he showed no sign so just had to go with it as he refused. He was great and trained within 2 days. Think you just have to watch your ds for signs.

Oh, after. Absolutely no contest! Mainly because they learn very quickly that "I need a WEE/POO" gets your immediate attention. Not what you need when you're dealnig with a new baby and have just settled down to feed them.

yes I'd wait too

You're all so quick!! Unanimously you all say the same too which is unusual on MN i find so you must be right. So I'll wait then until after then. Nice one girls

Mil thinks before new baby. Bound to put the pressure on me and she looks after him in 3 days a week so worried she'll do it against my wishes. Any thoughts?

After

After after after!!! I tried before with ds and he was 2.5. By the time dd arrived I was struggling to fit in toilet cubicles with him and me and a huge bump. And I had SPD so couldn't lift him onto a toilet seat without crying.

He's now just turned 4 and got the hang of things 3/4 months ago finally - I think I put him off though by pushing him when neither of us was in a position to do it properly IYSWIM.

Maybe sit him on the potty whenhe wakes up and at bedtime, but otherwise keep it all low key and wait til after the new arrival.

All the best

In theory I think before because it's easier to dedicate time and patience to this before newborn has arrived BUT I suspect that your DS is a little young to guarantee success. DS was 2.4 when we started training.

I would stand up to your MIL if I were you (easier said than done, I'm sure!)

If you think ds is ready then I think you should potty train now. From what I've seen many kids are ready from the age of 18 months, but we're too scared of pushing them before they are ready.; Potty training really isn't such a big deal, it is just a progression of development, but if you leave it too long they seem to become emotionally attached to their nappies. You can always try, and if it doesn't work out then go back to nappies.

my dd2 ws 6 months old when i toilet trained dd1 (who was 2 yrs 6mths)

dd2 wasnt crawling or anything

it was summer so dd1 just ran around bare bummed outside for a week then she had got the hang of it

she didnt use the potty, just ran to the toilet

i think having a non-crawling baby too didnt affect the toilet training in any way whatsoever

i say wait until you are 100% sure they are ready, and then it takes less time to get fully trained
