Baby won't take Calpol

My DD (5 months) currently is teething and has a cold/is snuffly with it. She also keeps almost choking on quite thick saliva, which is quite scary.

She is my PFB so I'm just assuming it's all tied in with teething, esp as she seems happy in herself when not grizzling. My problem is she won't swallow calpol, instead choosing to spit it all out (she has never taken it when we have tried previously, i.e. after jabs). Is there anything else I can do/give her to alleviate her pain?

p.s. thanks in advance!

Syringe into the side of the mouth then blow on her face.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/06/2014 12:58

Yep i was going to suggest the same.

If she really won't take it then you could ask the pharmacist if they have a suppository.

Put it in a bottle with some milk - even if you're breastfeeding, it works.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2014 13:01

Also have you tried teething powders or teething gels?

mousmous · 19/06/2014 13:01

ask for suppositories
pharmacist might need to order them in and they are a bit more expensive. but worth it.

NitramAtTheKrap · 19/06/2014 13:18

I second suppositories, much easier

AllJalapenoBusiness · 19/06/2014 13:19

Thank you all Smile

I haven't tried any specific teething remedies as yet, except giving her things/fingers to chew, as it's only since last night she has had these additional cold-like symptoms. I'll look into some of the powders. Thanks for the tip of blowing on her face, I'll give that a go as she is feeling slightly warm (not hot though) so I want to be able to bring a temp down quickly should she develop one.

Sadly she won't take a bottle, we're going to try expressed milk in a zippy or doidy cup soon ready for weaning; would it work giving calpol like that or not really (for future reference when she is used to other feeding methods!)?

Suppositories are great, was a bit wary of using them at first, but ds either spits out or vomits back calpol/nurofen. Suppositories don't seem to bother him at all.

Writerwannabe83 · 19/06/2014 15:03

Does DD have a dummy??

I had to give Calpol the other night and I would squirt a bit in DS's mouth and then immediately put his dummy in so as he sucked, he swallowed.

If any Calpol did dribble down his chin I would 'mop it up' with the dummy's teat and then put the dummy in DS's mouth so he sucked it all off.

It took a while but it was successful Smile

AllJalapenoBusiness · 19/06/2014 15:56

DD refused all dummies, but I could try it with a feed if nothing else works - I'll just have a wet wipe on hand in case of sticky residue!

Try a different brand or flavour of calpol.

minipie · 19/06/2014 17:27

What flavour is it? My dd's not keen on the sugar free strawberry but loves the orange. worth a try...

Endingthecharade · 19/06/2014 17:30

Suppositories! Mine always vomited with Calpol esp with fever, saved my life!

IAmNotDarling · 19/06/2014 20:27

hi, sorry but the blowing on her face is to make her gulp, not to cool her down Grin

it's a reflex thing.

AllJalapenoBusiness · 19/06/2014 20:59

IAmNotDarling haha I got what you meant, I didn't phrase myself properly - I want to use the Calpol to bring her temp down if it goes up, although added benefit there... Lack of sleep clouding the brain, sorry! Smile
