Sippy cup, straw cup, beaker or cup at 1 years old??

Hi ladies,

I hear you are supposed to ditch the bottles at 1 years old when they switch to cows milk, but switch to what type of cup? I hear sippy cup when I have looked on the internet but what is a sippy cup?? I don't actually know, I have now purchased over the last few months about 5 different cups, a tommee tippee blue one that has a pull up spout thing with handles on the side, one with like a rubber mound with one hole, one with a pop up straw, one with a slide around straw, one with a solid nib, and I'm still none the wiser!!

What sort of nib is actually better for their teeth? He is really good with all the cups and happily drinks out of all of them but not sure which ones are better than a bottle.

I have given him just a normal plastic cup of water but it just goes all down him, does anyone give a cup for their milk before bed at 1 years old, surely not?

Any input appreciated!

My DS had every cup going - but in the end I found the basic Tommee Tippee free-flow plastic cup with the flip up free flow spout best. My DD never had anything else, not even a bottle. I think they are about £1.60 in Sainsburys. I now have about 10 in various colours for when visitors come. At one they still like the handles on the side. I found cleaning those valves a faff.

The hv gave us a basic free flow sippy cup which both dc took to really well. Unfortunately it got dropped and broken and I've not been able to find another one.

Now we have the same as MrsMarigold I think. They're a bugger to clean properly: the spout gets blocked with gunk and I have to fanny about trying to clean it with bits of rolled up tissue; but dd wouldn't drink out of anything else.

Now, at nearly 21 months, I take the top off when it's almost empty do she can learn to drink from it as an open cup.

A sippy cup usually refers to a free flow. I've always found the basic tommee tippee to be the best. It's microwaveable and cleans beautifully with a rinse and bunged in the dishwasher with the spout open.

For trips out we use the nuby straw cup because it's no spill so dd can have it in the back of the car if need be. But it's far more difficult to clean.

DD used the tommee tippee sippy cup but I moved her on to a straw cup around 14 months. DS (just turned 1) absolutely refuses to use a sippy - he'll use a soft silicone spouted sippy for milk (NUK Mickey Mouse) but not a hard spout, so I ended up giving him a straw cup early on...around 9 months maybe? He still has milk from the sippy but the water he drinks throughout the day is from his straw cup which is an orange Momma cup available on amazon. I love that cup, I've got two.

We always use the doidy cups. They have no lid but learnt quickly. As you can see the flow it's easy to help them

Thanks ladies, that's really helpful. So basically free flow is a sippy, but as long as it's a move on from a bottle, it's fine.

Tomee tippee sound easier to clean and straw ones good for the car- great advice thanks, I will get a couple more tommee tippee for at home and keep the straw ones for on the move.

Thanks

My ds is 14 months and has an active supper Tommee tippee cup for water. He has absolutely no interest in drinking milk in anything other than a bottle though but I'm not too worried about that yet!

All drinks from tommee tipped cup described by others or a plastic cup but not for morning/ evening milk (he's 16 months,). We've tried but he just wants comfort of a bottle. Not worried as he is a fantastic eater and uses cup/ Beaker the rest of the time.
