Help please - how do you clean wee off carpets?

If your potty-training child wee's on the carpet, how do you clean it without discolouring it? We didn't have downstairs carpets for DD1 but DD2's just christened the new carpet in the sitting room and although I've soaked as much of it up as possible, I'm not sure what to do now as all my kitchen cleaning things are for hard surfaces.

Damp cloth and bicarb?

Buy loads of really cheap kitchen roll and blot it up. Also mix some 'Dreft'(or other wool cleaner) washing powder with water and spray onto the area and rub in gently with one finger as you don't want to ruin the pile of the carpet. Leave to dry, then hoover up.

Thanks very much for all your replies. Am off to rootle in the dark recesses of my cupboard to see if I have any of those things.

Okay - I've found some vinegar but it says white wine vinegar - can I use that? How much do I need to put in the warm water as knowing me I'd put way too much in and then the house would reek of it for days and days!

It depends on what type of carpet it is.

We have 100% wool - light beige colour. I have found 25ml (a capful) dettol - fresh fragrance) to 1 litre of water, mixed in an old spray bottle, didn't stain the carpet. After spraying, mop up with old tea towel. Vinegar made my carpet smell like a chippy.

Thank you linabolton - will try that.
