Sleepyhead - do you use sheets/ blankets with it?

I'm expecting my first baby in a couple of weeks and realising how little I know about newborns...

We've got a Sleepyhead (John Lewis and NCT sell them) but I'm trying to work out what a baby will sleep in within it.

At the moment it's boiling so I know it won't need much right now but given how changeable our weather is then if it's cool enough to warrant a sheet and/or blanket in the next few months, can I just use that on top and kind of wrapped around the Sleepyhead? Or will I need to swaddle or use a sleeping bag?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has used it and can advise!

Just the same as if they were in a Moses basket. Good rule of thumb for babies is 1 more layer than you.

DD's room is at about 22 degrees overnight (she's 13m) and she's in a vest, shorty PJs and a light sleeping bag.

Sleeping bags can't be used til 7 or 8lb depending on the make, so you'll need a cellular blanket over the baby til then. Cellular is important incase it covers the face, so they can still breath. Or swaddle, which babies either love or hate!

The gro company have a handy chart here

My SIL is using a sleepyhead and loves it. Good luck with the next few weeks.

Forgot to say all babies are different though so you need to feel their back/chest to see if they're too hot or cold.

Thanks a lot, and that's a good tip about the cellular blanket, hadn't really thought the reason for using them through.

Good to hear your SIL gets on well with the Sleepyhead. Does she just tuck the sheet or cellular blanket kind of around and underneath the whole thing?

I think she just puts the blanket over her without tucking in, but her baby is one of the nice non-fidgety ones. If it had been my DS he'd have been in a sleeping bag stapled on Grin

I put a sheet underneath, and a muslin, as sleepyheads covers are a pita to change when they are sicked on! Otherwise a cellular blanket on top.

They are brilliant!

Fantastic - thanks both!

Sleepyhead was my absolute God send - of all the things you buy for a new born that you're then selling a few months later after only being used a few times, that (and sleepytot) is the thing I would buy again and again.

My ds loathed his Moses basket, was just too diddy to go straight to his cotbed and wasn't over fussed with sleeping on me - the only place I could get him to sleep was his swing chair. Then I got sleepyhead and he loved it!
Anyway, after my evangelizing, in answer to your actual question, I used to tuck a folded sheet around him and then just add extra blankets over the top depending on how warm it was. Oh and same as Parsnip, a muslin under his head for drool or vom.
