Figured out citrus caused my dd eczema

Thought I would post for any parent who has a child suffering from eczema. I figured out it was citrus (oranges, clementines) causing my daughters eczema. It would come and go and we did not know what was causing it. She would get bad flare ups on her arms and legs. We went away for the weekend and left her with the grandparents (she was starting to clear) and we came back to find her eczema had flared up! We found out she had eaten oranges every day. We stopped the oranges...away went the eczema and completely gone! Its still early stages, been a week. So lets see. Cross fingers. Hope this helps someone. I know doctors will say skin problems are not caused by foods....but they def are. At least most. The problem is...its different for everyone. It is hard to figure out what is causing the problem.

actually.....this might help mine! I have tried cutting out EVERYTHING else and it never occurred to me that citrus might be the problem (even though my son has turned out to be very intolerant)....

Interesting. Will give it a go! Thanks.

even nhs says citrus fruits can trigger eczema - it is one of the reasons that citrus fruits should be avoided until 6 months.

When I had my allergy test it was dairy, cigarette smoke and oranges. That was 30 years ago.

We did not give citrus until our daught was 13 months....and bc it was such small amounts, we did not really notice. Her eczema would only be on small part of her arm...until she good eat more and it went on her legs as well....then I really took notice of it coming and going. It took us until she is just a few months over two to figure it out. She is not 10 days off citrus and clear. I will see if she can have lemon later...I want to go one month free of citrus fruits to make sure thats what it is. If she is clear one month, then it is 100% citrus. I will then see if she can have lemon in her water. Seatoffmy pants. I hope it is citrus for you! Takes a load off my mind, now that she is clear. It was seriously stressing me out!

Citrus, inc strawberries and pineapple but also apple ( as we discovered this weekend, dd's hands where she was holding her apple are now riddled with eczema).

Note though that not all eczema is purely dietary related, its just that certain foods can aggravate it more.

How can you allergy test your baby? x

nickelbabe · 15/06/2014 21:58

eczema is the skin's reaction to something the body doesn't like. it can be food or chemical or environmental.
I would hope that any doctor would know that.

anyway,I'm glad yyou've found your daughter's trigger.
we're still hunting for ours, but it seems likely to be pollen.

It took us a while to figure it out. We were going to get her an allergy test...but it looks like we wont have too! Not all doctors understand that food causes eczema or acne. Or maybe they just don't admit to it! But I have met with a few who rather push creams and drugs then discuss diet. I understand diet is not the cause for all...but I really believe it is for most. Problem is it can be one thing or a few and its different for everyone...making it so hard to figure out! It took me about two years to figure out what caused my skin to break out and one year to figure out for my daughter eczema. Good luck to everyone else trying to figure it out!
