How do you make sure your non-sporty older children get enough exercise?

DS1 is 13 and completely unco-ordinated. He is very bad at anything involving a ball.

Until recently it wasn't really a problem because he/we spend a lot of time outdoors and he would usually be running around like a made thing playing some made up game Smile However, now he's all grown up he's doing less and less of that and will sit outdoors with a book or walk with the adults (active but not making you puff exercise IYSWIM)

He sometimes comes to park run with me and is a reasonable runner but he doesn't enjoy it and comes under protest. He's a good swimmer but complains when I make him go. He does love going to Airsoft (grown men running around the woods with toy guns) with DH but they only go once a month. It's only on about once a month and in any case it's far too expensive to be doing much more often.

What do your young teens enjoy if they don't like sport?

Nothing, frankly. I just used to make mine walk to school and back instead. It was a mile each way for one, more for the other one.

DS used to like free running for a while. He'd come of that very pink and sweaty. There was an organised session in a gymnastics place.

He does do football, but not enough to get him properly fit.

I try to talk him in to running but if I made him do it, I know he'd hate it.

Mine eventually got fit by cycling everywhere at Uni. Before that he was OK but not super fit.

Don't have teens but my parents insisted we walk anywhere possible. No lifts unless really not at all feasible. We were sent to the shops on errands a mile away, always walked the 1.5 miles to school. Its become a life long habit, will always walk if I can.

Judo, swimming twice a week, walks, we go to lots of places and have to walk to the tube to get to them, tube is about a mile away so brisk walk there and back, dog walking, ds scoots but scooting is great exercise and good for core strength as he has to keep his balance all the time. He had begun to get a bit flabby so I stepped up the exercise and activity and can see it melting off him.

DD doesn't really like team sports or pe so pretty much every sport out there available to us. But she really enjoys going to the gym, maybe your DS could do an induction and see if he likes it?
