On a day like today when it hasn't been very hot mine have been out in the garden on and off all day. When it is very hot I limit them to between 9am-11am & after 5pm.

They are 20 months.

Just make sure they are well covered, kept in the shade as much as possible, wear hats and suncream.

Depends on age. Babies under six months shouldn't have any sun exposure at all, and no children should be out between 11 and 3. You need to remember they can get heat exhaustion as well as sunburn. Offer lots of water too.

DS is 20 months and we're in and out the shade all day. I think there's a developed fear of the sun. Sensible precautions and not too much exposure also needs to be balanced with the need to get some sun exposure too.

We don't have a garden so can't just nip in and out, so we're always going back and forth to the park and home. There's a paddling pool in our local park so on sunny/hot days we'll go for an hour around 10am and he's just in a swim nappy, then back to play in the shady part of the park, home for lunch and nap at midday, back out around 2 to the supermarket then back to the pool around 3 for an hour.

I personally think it's about managing exposure, not just covering them up. DS is mixed race though and I need to consider Vit D deficiency. You can have them out in the sun for short periods regularly while acting sensibly - suncream, hat, lots of water, short bursts of sun then in the shade and back and forth, avoiding the hottest hours of the day etc.
