What do you give a CMPI/soya intolerant toddler to drink?

My 22 month old was diagnosed CMPI in January. Taking him off dairy improved things considerably for a while - sleeping, nappies, behaviour. He was put onto soya milk, and things slowly slid backwards again. So now he has been diagnosed soya intolerant as well. But what do I give him to drink? He hates almond milk, coconut milk (recommended by the dietitian but got thrown across the room, and he is usually the least fussy eater ever), oat milk (which has no calcium anyway), too young for rice milk. He will probably grow accustomed to the almond milk at least, but in the meantime, any ideas for what I could give him, or how to make the milk more palatable without adding sugar? I don't want him to dehydrate, and am also concerned that he gets enough calcium. He drinks lots of water, but nothing like the litre+ of fluid that an active toddler needs.

DD is 23 months and has water or diluted fruit juice/squash. She has two breastfeeds a day (not massive) and will occasionally have almond/hazelnut milk.

I give her a vitamin supplement in case she doesn't get enough calcium, but she eats plenty of other sources so I think she'd be fine anyway.

If some one else is having a milky drink she occasionally get a hot chocolate (frothed up almond milk with a bit of cocoa) or warmed up milk with a bit of honey and vanilla essence. She's not too fussed!

Honey and vanilla essence sounds great! I will try that, thank you. And frothing it is a good idea too. BabyGrinch is a bit of a milk monster, and we still rely on a bottle as part of the bedtime routine. Given that we are barely and infrequently at reasonable nights, we don't want to start fooling with a routine that works until he is a bit more stable.

Ds has been dairy/ soya free from 6mo. I breast fed plus water until a year. Then he has had the fortified oat milk (blue one ) which has almost as much calcium as cows milk. It took ds a while but he got used to it and now loves it. We now do two milk drinks a day for calcium and water/ squash the rest of the time.
I recommend oat milk. Dietician said we should use it and it is great for cooking/ baking etc.
i would speak to your gp/health visitor/ dietician.

Oatly oat milk has calcium and some other stuff. I think a mug full is 30% of your daily calcium requirement but would have to run downstairs to check. The dietician thinks it's good. My son really loves chocolate oatly from Holland and Barrett.

We use oat for cooking - will keep trying (I quite like it!). In the meantime, success last night with a different brand if almond milk! He necked 200 mls. So he either liked it or had given up in despair!!

My nephew has Redbush tea instead of milk, still mostly milk but he doesn't know that. Not sure which milk would make the best tea though?

Redbush is an idea too - we drink it by the bucketload and BabyGrinch keeps trying to steal it! I might try with oat milk first - seems the most neutral taste to me.

As he is intolerant and not allergic, have you thought of trying that A2 milk? Worth looking into.

Thanks shine, but that milk still has lactose. BabyGrinch has a temporary lactose intolerance at the moment as well, after having gastroenteritis 9 times between 7 and 18 months old (he was 2 months prem, so until recently got every bug going if it so much as looked at him).

If he really won't take milk then best to just give him calcium supplements. There's not much one can do.

Have you tried the chocolate or strawberry flavoured coco milk?

Ooh I didn't know they exist! Will go look for them.

We make his bread, so might start adding calcium to that.

My dd is dairy intolerant - I breastfed and then gradually swopped over to Oatmilk on the advice of a paediatrician at an allergy clinic. Obviously we use ones with calcium and vit d in. Tesco sell a few diff brands of it next to their uht stuff. It's actually really creamy and sweet though has less sugar than a dairy based formula. My dd loves it and swopping onto it fm breast milk was fine. We've tried a few diff brands and to be honest she didn't notice any difference so we go with the one of offer!

I'm surprised a dietician/your dr didn't recommend this. Our paediatrician said soya milk is rarely recommended as the oestrogen levels are too high and if you're intolerant to dairy you often are intolerant to soya too. I'd be asking for a review or a referral to an allergy clinic. Any dairy substitute needs to be part of a plan with a dietician as they will calculate how much per day they need based on the diet. HTH.
