High temp

Ds 12 m has come down with a high temp. Fluctuating between 38.5 and 39.5. He is otherwise fine. Happy playing, eating etc.
we have a 1st birthday party tomorrow at a friend house. Would you go? She is happy for us to go as he seems otherwise well, and because he's dribbling loads is hopefully probably teething. But I'm not sure about the other mums being too happy.

They can go up & down so super fast at that age. I would have to wait until tomorrow & see how he was then. in my experience, most parents would take babe if he was not vomitting/obviously contagious and seeming happy in himself, especially after a dose of calpol.

Fab thanks. He's playing fine so I'm sure he would want to go and have fun but obviously I can't be sure he doesn't have a bug.

Teething shouldn't cause a temperature. His body sounds like it's fighting something and tbh, with something like chicken pox you see these nonspecific symptoms before the spots. Who knows what he is brewing. Personally, I try not to go anywhere with a potentially contagious child unless I have to.

If the temp is gone tomorrow, I'd go BTW. Just not with a fever. You don't need to give calpol for a temp on its own either. Only if in pain or uncomfortable. A temp on its own is a normal and healthy response and doesn't require meds.

Teething does cause temperatures. But like others have said wait until the morning and see how he's doing, hopefully it is one of those random young child things that you may never understand!!

AntinousWild · 07/06/2014 18:30

No research has ever found that teething causes temperatures and you shouldn't dismiss it as teething.

At those temps he absolutely definitely has a bug. It may be viral, it may pass quickly, but he has a bug. It is not teething.

As a pp says, calpol isn't needed to bring down a temp under 39 unless they're uncomfortable, but over 39 the body's response ceases being helpful and becomes a problem.

I wouldn't go unless impressive turnaround.
