to pull up or not to pull up ?

My DD is 2.3 and I feel showing many signs she is ready for training. Can anyone suggest the best way to start- have moved her into pull ups just becuase she likes doing "standey up nappies". I have sat her on the potty, which she will happily do for ages but nothing appearing, even giving her drinks whilst there ! Are these nappies that give the wet feeling a good idea, I know people say straight into pants is good but surely in the early stages this isnt practical at all, just thought these "feel and learn " nappies may be a good idea. Can anyone help with opionions on these nappies and on best way to start potty training.

the feel and learn things didn't work for us.
Ds1 wore pull ups for quite a long time before he was dry and DS2 didn't wear them at all so I reckon it's all trial and eror!
Your DD is still quite little for potty training I would say but having said that my friend's DD was dry at 18 months so they're all different!

(no help at all there was I? )

Thanks , think she is ready, just going to try and see how it goes.

Went straight into knickers with dd1. Dd2 isn't ready for pt but is going through a nudie phase, so we tried pull-ups to see if she kept them on. We discovered the big disadvantage is when she took them off and got poo all down her legs!

rabbitt, unfortunately I think straight into pants is the only way - you basically have to find a good 3 or 4 days when you can stay at home, and expect lots of accidents in the first day or two. If there's a warm dry spell, get her in the garden, then it is much less hassle for you - also, have an upstairs and downstairs potty. Good luck!

i agree pants worked best for me on all three.

Pants definately a pull up is just another nappy to them.
If you go straight for pants then you know straight away that they have had a wee and you can pop them straight on the potty in a pull up you don't so you can never catch it at the exact moment.
Why not try just being relaxed about it, pants at home pull up when out and tell her that she can do a wee in the toilet out if she wants to.
Wish I had tried this way first my friend did and one day her DD said she wanted to wear pants out and has been trained since that day.

nah, pull ups are just a way for the nappy companies to keep the money rolling in a bit longer!

Straight to pants - much less confusing for the child. As adath said pull ups are just the same as nappies to kids.

If your dd is ready to be trained, pants won't be a problem; you may have some wet ones but a wet pair of pants will be a learning experience for her! my opinion on the best way of training -- readiness is ALL. Give it a go, but personally I don't think it has to be a hard, long struggle; my ds did it within two days because he was very ready....if it's a hard slog and you are constantly wiping up accidents, tbh I would give up and try again a couple of months later!

oops!

longwaytogo · 05/09/2006 21:41

tbh if their ready their ready, but I always used nappies or pullups if I was going out because it was just far easier than wet car seat or pushchair and I don't think it delayed them at all. Thats with all 4 children.

My baby is now potty trained and feels a bit sad that my baby is growing up. Even went to sleep without his dummy tonight.

I say straight to pants but then I am a radical cloth nappy lover!!! 'Feel and learn' WTF!!!!

notasheep · 05/09/2006 23:23

agree with sunnysideup-pull ups are a con,dd was straight to knickers too

Snowstorm · 06/09/2006 10:59

Pull-ups are nappies - very useful if your child uses the quick-release velcro attachments of a normal nappy to continuously escape from them but I agree, they are not a potty-training aid.

Right my DD is 2.3 and I trained her 3 months ago, just after her birthday. We went straight to pants (£3 for 10 at Asda, get 2 packs) and spent 4 days pretty much just in the garden and she was rubbish the first couple of days. Then she went to nursery (I work 3 days). And was improving. She is now dry day and night without a single pullup - and they are expensive. I used them for a while with DS at night.

ProfYaffle · 06/09/2006 11:31

I'm on day 5 of potty training my 2.4yo dd. I used pull ups for a while before the actual training to get her used to pulling them up and down instead of lying down nappies. On Saturday we went cold turkey and abandoned the nappies for pants, we had 2 days of wee everywhere then on day 3 it clicked, all going well so far ...
