Hi,

I take my DD out in the morning to playgroups etc. In the afternoon, I don't know what to do with her. We can't go out again as its too tiring for me, plus I have cooking to do. She is expecting a lot more interaction from me. She has plenty of books and toys but wants my attention a lot. What do you do? Any ideas for activities?

I put music on and sing and dance [feels daft]
Play peekaboo forever or hide and seek
Ds really likes me to chase him so do that for a while
Try to get housework done with 1 YO clinging to legs Smile
Go out shopping
Read books
Look at stuff on the tablet
Have started colouring with crayons ie I colour/he tries to chew on crayons
Throw snacks on play mat and try to have a cup of coffee in peace Grin

Marking place as, looking through that list, I'm a pretty boring mammy !!

Dd has just turned 1 her favourite game is being chased by the Hoover or trying to climb the stair gate.

DP is a SAHD and they do the following:-

  • make extensive use of the free creche in the gym!!
  • go swimming
  • go shopping - a LOT
  • put music on and dance
  • now it's warm we've filled her play table with sand and DD plays out on the decking
  • blow bubbles outside (she loves bubbles)
  • walk dogs
  • when all else fails (quite often), cBeebies

Sorry just realised you're looking for at-home activities. TBH my DD would go skiddly diddly insane if she had to stay at home every afternoon (as would DP). Couldn't you maybe do something out of the house on a couple of days?

Roll of wallpaper on the kitchen floor, strip baby to nappy and set free with paint! (Then bath and mop floor afterwards!)
Make dens with chairs, blankets etc.
Pile sofa cushions/ pillows etc in the middle of the room for climbing on.

Thanks everyone! Smile

Lilliana, are you for real about the paint? Shock

DS (13 months) loves 'helping' Hmm with the plant pots in the garden. Put the mud in. Take the mud out. Put it in again. Eat a bit. Add a pile of stones to the mix and he's in heaven. Indoors he likes playing with tubs and stuff to put in the tubs and tip back out again. He's also just starting to bring me his books to read to him which is cute as he grabs my hand and tries to put the book in it.

We did painting today! Just strip baby to nappy, run bath too hot (so it's the right temp when your done) and let the art work flow!

Lilliana · 04/06/2014 21:10

Yes but we live in a house with a big kitchen with Lino that needs replacing. We have a ball making footprints, painting with patterned rollers, sponges, potato prints etc Grin

PleaseJustShootMeNow · 04/06/2014 21:11

DS paints with his dinner most nights.

Other things she loves, extended bath time (anything up to an hour!!) playing football in the garden, watching cbeebies jumping on the bed!

Lilliana · 04/06/2014 21:13

When dd had chicken pox and was stuck at home I put a 75p bag of porridge oats in a plastic box with jugs, pots, spoons etc She spent hours playing in it every day and much easier to clean up than sand

HilariousInHindsight · 04/06/2014 21:16

Play box
Walking around the house
Looking at the birds in the garden
Stacking blocks
You instruments
She loves to play with Iggle Piggle and Upsey Daisy dolls
Watch cbeebies
Listen to music and dance with me to it
Roll balls around the floor.

14 months old - but not that much of a difference.

She also loves watching birds / bees, picking daisies, running around anywhere outside. Playing with her kitchen (the best buy we've had). Reading books and singing. She's another that loves baths too. Also if she gets antsy I find going somewhere else in the house helps eg upstairs to play in her bedroom instead of downstairs
