What age for a bed?

Just occurred to me that I have no idea when these things usually happen so...
what age for a bed? Cot bed, little bed or normal single bed? And do you normally change to a duvet when they go in a bed?

and also what age do they stop using a high chair? Do they then use a booster thing or a mini table and chairs or something else?

DS is still little (14months) but I don't know anyone with older toddlers! Thanks!

Am guessing it's up to you! DD is 15 months and we were considering transitioning her to a bed in the next couple of months, because she really seemed to struggle to settle down in her cot. We'll have to wait and see because she's improved a bit. We're just planning to use a normal bed with some sort of side guard.

WRT high chair - I'm not planning on letting her out until she can understand commands! Then I expect I'll use a little booster seat.

Ours went into a full size single bed about 24-26 months. They refused to use a high chair at about 18 months and simply knelt up to table on regular dining chairs.

Depends on the child. Dc1 was 2 before she started to try and climb out. Dc2 was 16 months.
Think I used a booster seat from 14 months and got rid of the highchair.

DS has recently moved into a normal single bed at 22 months - basically because he has refused to sleep in a cot since Christmas. We got a single so that i can get in to co sleep if he is upset.
He had rarely slept through and now sleeps through more often than not. From Jan to April 5 times from April when in big bed - 5 times a week and the other 2 nights I just get in to. Worried I am jinxing it now though bragging.
He hasn't got proper bedding he is just in his sleeping bag - we have a bed guard and a stair-gate on his door.

Bed - when you think that the cot/cotbed is a problem, really. So pretty much when they try and climb out of it, or when you need the cot for another DC. DD is nearly 2 and a half and shows no signs up trying to climb out so I refuse to take the sides off just because we're one of the last! It means she can't climb out when she's trying to refuse a nap Grin

We went to a duvet before she was 2 though, when we would have had to buy the next size grobags, and also when we realised she was staying relatively still in bed.

Booster seat... Probably about 18m, like others, but one with straps.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/06/2014 16:17

Ds was on a mattress on the floor at 16 months as he kept getting over the side of the cot, I think we bought a single bed a couple of months later iirc.

FriedaMensch · 02/06/2014 16:39

Mine went into a bed, with a duvet, at about 20 months.

Don't remember about the high chair. Ours converts to a normal (height adjustable) chair, and I think we had taken the front bar and straps off by about 20 months too, so that DD could get up and down on her own.

CPtart · 02/06/2014 16:49

Both mine went into a children's bed with sidebar at 20 months. Also swapped to duvet. Let them play on it in the daytime but in doing so never let them climb off it in their own, always lifted them of with the words "no, you mustn't climb off yourself, wait for mummy or daddy". Seems ridiculous, but this "training" ensured that come night time neither ever climbed out!

ilovepowerhoop · 02/06/2014 16:52

dd went into a single bed at 2 but ds was happy in his cot until he was 2½ years old - again he went into a single bed. Both mine used a booster seat at the table from about 18 months.

Hulababy · 02/06/2014 16:57

DD went into a toddler bed around 18 months. Was great for her.

She has a Tripp Trapp highchair so it was actually in use, in its various states, from 5 months to about 10 years. It didn't have a tray so it just went straight up to the table. We stopped using the baby set part of it aorund 12-18 months, once she was able to climb up and down from it.

snowgirl1 · 02/06/2014 16:58

DD is 2.5 years old and we still haven't taken the sides off the cot yet. I'm thinking we'll take the sides off in the next couple of months.

Moved to a kiddies table & chair in the kitchen just before she was 2; but she still uses the high chair for meals that we all eat together (but sometimes she will insist on using a normal chair and we just add a cushion for her).

minipie · 02/06/2014 17:36

Glad you asked this OP! DD is 18 months and I've been wondering about both these things.

DD is still in her high chair (antilop) for meals. We do have a booster, it lives at GPs house. At the moment she's happy in the high chair so will keep her in that until she seems uncomfortable or starts to refuse it.

She is still in her cot and sleeping bag. She doesn't try to climb out so again I'm inclined to leave her (also she's always been a pretty terrible sleeper but recently showed signs of improvement so don't want to mess with anything at the moment!)

my2bundles · 02/06/2014 19:03

My eldest was ready to move into a single bed age 23 months, my youngest was ready and moved into a junior bed at 3 years, he then moved into a single bed age 6. They are all different and ready at very different ages.

NancyinCali · 03/06/2014 18:02

My (just) 2 year old is still in a cot but occasionally naps in a single bed. DD2 on the way soon though so unless we buy another cot we may have to rethink that strategy.

She's been refusing a high chair at home for months so kneels on a regular dining chair. She'll use a high chair in restaurants though.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 03/06/2014 18:06

We took the sides off dds cot when she was 2.5. She wasnt even standing in her cot let alone trying to climb out but my baby bump for no.2 made it difficult to lift dd in and out.

So its a toddler sized bed but she has a full sized duvet on as her cotbed one kept falling off her. Its tucked under one side and bottom end and we tuck the other side in when we put her to bed.

Highchair- had the ikea one but got rid of it before she was two as she just seemed happy to sit at the dining table or her toddler table and chair set. Just gave it to a friend. Will either get that one back or pick up a new one (under £15) for this next baby. Still uses a highchair when eating out. She is 2.6

Willthisworknow · 04/06/2014 18:34

I just put my 22 month old in a bed but she had started jumping out the cot. My other 2 transitioned at 2. Doesn't really matter when as long as safe eg hanging cords, small items for swallowing - make sure room baby proof as 15 months still q young.
