No developmental checks for my 3 year old

My son is 3.6 and hasn't had a developmental check since he was 6 weeks old. Is this correct or have we missed something? When I was taking him to be weighed regularly when he was a baby, the staff used to say how the system has changed due to lack of funding and that children don't get the check ups they previously did. I've got a 19 year old and 11 year old who would have had developmental checks at 2 and 3+. However, I thought that they said that we would have a 3 year check but we have heard nothing. Is this correct do you think? I have no concerns and he goes to a nursery who would highlight their own concerns if necessary but I do feel like I could have been doing anything with him and no one would ever know. At one time, I would have liked to speak to someone about him speech (and probably still would a bit) but it has improved now to the point that he speaks in complete sentences and talks all the time but so that it is understood completely by myself, husband and daughters and bits of it by other people. What do you think (1) should I have had a review and (2) how normal is this level of speech in a 3.6 year old.

I'm surprised you haven't has a review, we had one with the HV at 9 months and 2 years ish and thought this was fairly normal

Pagwatch · 02/06/2014 09:05

You can ask to see someone - you don't have to be called in.
Things get missed. Why don't you just phone them?

Flexibilityiskey · 02/06/2014 09:08

Yes I'm sure you should have had a review. I think DS had one at about 2. I would contact the HV or GP to have a chat about the speech. It sounds like he is catching up, but far better to get it looked into, in case there is a problem, and get help early, rather than leave it. Speech will make a big difference to him when he starts school

We get nothing at all round here. Utterly rubbish service, no contact made from a HV since dc's were each around 3 weeks old.

Damnautocorrect · 02/06/2014 09:21

Mine had nothing either but he was never weighed either.
If there's nothing you feel concerned about I wouldn't worry.

Damnautocorrect · 02/06/2014 09:23

Ok just re read it as I missed the speech concern. I'd speak to hv or gp.

AnyFucker · 02/06/2014 09:24

Chase it up, especially if you have concerns

Don't passively sit by while he gets missed and then complain about it.

WeeClype · 02/06/2014 09:27

When the HV came to visit me when I had my baby DD she mentioned my 2yr old would be due a check but probably wouldn't get it as they were so short staffed.

defineme · 02/06/2014 09:33

In my area you only get it if you request it.
Get an appointment with your health visitor.
My gp would also refer to a speech therapist.
I have known a 3 year old with similar sounding issues who was also prone to tripping up- he needed gromits.
my son was similar but also didn't play with other kids and couldn't wave or point. He has asd.
my point is it could be anything but you need it checked.

I had a 9 month one and a 2 year one with DS, born 2008.

merlehaggard · 02/06/2014 09:42

Well that's the thing really. I'm not the sort to sit by passively and then complain but I don't think he especially needs one, would quite have liked it if it was on offer but don't want to waste their time if they are simply short staffed. I don't think I do have any speech concerns. When he first started at the nursery (in December) they were watching him as a possible one that may need some speech help but feel that it is probably not the case now - assuming he continues to improve. I was wondering if I def should have had a check up and it seems likely that I should have but possibly not got one due to short staffing. If I had any real concerns, I would def see someone. He has his vaccinations coming up, so I might just mention it then.

Well then, it's up to you innit

Personally, if any concerns had been raised by anyone at any point I would be arranging the checks, busy HV team or not. I would hate to think that is a problem came up later, that an opportunity for early intervention had been missed

AnyFucker · 02/06/2014 09:49

if a problem

merlehaggard · 02/06/2014 10:29

Yeah thanks. I think I will.

Good plan. If all is well, then no harm done.
