Me and DH are planning to take DD (5 months) swimming for the 1st time soon. We have an all in one swimming suit for her but what else do we need? I know she will need a swimming nappy but from what I've read there not good at holding in wee or you have to put a normal nappy underneath them??? Also what kind of float will she need?

Swimming nappies aren't meant to keep in wee, they just keep in poo. Don't put a normal nappy underneath, it will blow up like a balloon and disintegrate! Grin

You don't need floats at that age as you can just hold them. You can buy the ones which are like little boats but I think they're a bit of a waste of money.

Swim nappy fibe

Oops fine...only need to hold poos in.

Take a bottle of milk (if ffing) as tgey usually get very hungry. Take your towel onto the poolside so that when she is done she can be wrapped asap.

Usually only a short swim at that age but if she is enjoyong it, one of you get out after 20mins and get dressed so that the dressed person is ready to sort the baby straight away when finished while tge other person gets ready

Oh and we never used a float just took turns holding her.

Last week we took our 9 month old DD swimming for the first time. She had a swim nappy on and a baby wet suit, that was all. We didn't have any problems with the nappy. We went to a normal pool (no baby pool), and my husband and I took it turns holding her whilst standing in the shallow end so didn't use a float.

She absolutely loved it, kicking her little legs and splashing her hands, was so much fun! Enjoy!

Thanks for the replies I stupidly thought swim nappies were for wee and poo but I guess they would have to be absorbent. How long for her 1 st swim should we stay? I wouldn't want her getting too cold. She loves being in the bath so hoping she will like swimming

Id imagine she would be ok for about the same length of time as the bath - 15/20/30 mins. Do they have a warmer kids pool?

sprite25 · 01/06/2014 20:59

There's only one pool but I think they keep it quite warm as they always have baby, toddler Anand kids swimming lessons there

The pool we went to was aparantely 30degrees, it felt much colder though. I was cold and so was DH. DD didn't seem bothered though, was having way too much fun! We therefore only stayed in for about 15-20 minutes. I think this was a good amount of time for her first time.
