Good parenting books?

I have a DD aged 10 months. I'm starting to think about what sort of parent I want to be and what sort of relationship I want with her etc.

To cut a long story short: I don't want to be my mum!!! She was impatient, angry, smacked me when I was naughty and didn't really talk to me about anything! She had a terrible childhood and it turns out she'd been depressed on and off. Now she's better and is absolutely wonderful with my DD thankfully!

However, my upbringing is all I know so I want to explore how to teach myself good ways of disciplining etc for when that time arises! I don't want to be an angry parent just because it's all I knew.

Can anyone recommend any good parenting books for me? Thanks!

I haven't read it, but I often see this book recommended on here.

Yes! How To Talk is brilliant although it won't be much use yet, it's better once they can talk and really comes into its own around school age.

When Your Kids Push Your Buttons is a good one too, although again it might be harder to relate to when your DD is still small.

For baby/todddler stuff I love the website www.ahaparenting.com :)

I like aha parenting too. I have also found Toddlercalm by Sarah Ockwell-Smith really helpful, it discusses what goes on in toddlers' brains which explains why they act in ways we find really frustrating and how to cope with it in a calm way!

'How Not to F**k Them Up' by Oliver James is a very good read...I'm re-reading it now I have my 2nd dd as there's been a bit of a gap!
