On sept. 23rd I arrive in the UK from canada to begin a one year masters program at LSE with family in tow. My dh is staying home with the kids this year and I will be studying after being at home (I Have worked off and on the last 9 years but mostly off). Been out of school for (yikes!) 18 years. I am worried I will be so out of place with all hte young and fresh faces. I am a little worried I will also be to set in my ways and cynical listening to the youngsters talk about how to save the world and the ivory tower profs. Anyway, any advice on how to fit into this new life. Despite my crumudeon posting here, I am very excited about this new stage of life and so glad to be back in the UK again (we lived here 3 years ago when my spouse studed for a year here), Just wondering, will a forty something mom be a total fish out of water. I am afraid of being taken for hte professor!

No advice, I'm afraid. But it sounds really exciting!

You will be fine. I am 50 and doing my MSc this year. I went back to college 3 years ago, part time and I was by no means the only middleaged mum there - although I think I was the oldest!!! I had been at home for 12 years, then back to work for 5 years. I had to go on a course to learn to use a computer before I could go back to work!! I wasn't the only middleaged mum on that course either. I bet you will find a real assortment of ages on your course. Good luck.

I went back to university when I was 28. It was fabulous!!!!! There were a lot of mature students on my course (B-Ed) whose company I really enjoyed, but that didn't stop me from mixing widely with students 10 years younger too.

Yes, there will be lots of fresh faced youngsters, but you certainly won't be out of place.

I hope you enjoy every minute of it.

sounds good. I am sure I am being silly and after a few days I will fit right in. I remember now 18 years ago when I went to school there were"mature students " in my class and we all got on. ONe became a good friend of mine. I just never thought I would someday be the mature student. You note),(and I have noticed this about mysel)Idon't seem as concerned about academics etc,as how I will look. God am I that vain!,
