Hello, parents. My child would like to go to a Tiffin School, that is great. My child is taking his education in his own hands. However, Tiffin is an hour away and I was wondering what to do. Nevertheless, he still wants to go. Does anyone have opening time and advise on what to do.

Hi there
16 is not a bad age to be somehow independent! My son started going to Chesham at the age of 12-13. We drop him off at harrow on the hill to catch one train and he does it all on his own back home 1,5hrs commute everyday. I am proud of him, they make friends in the train very quickly and they look after teach other that way. You just need to have faith in him and in God Wink

I commuted an hour each way from 11. So did DH. He will be. Fine OP!

In the days of grammar schools that long a commute was common. We all survived it from the age of 11.

I walked an hour home from school every day from 12 years. Not so long ago 16 would have been considered an adult infact my uncle went to work 100 miles away at 16.

PastaandCheese · 30/05/2014 09:29

lola you are so right. My Dad started full time work at 15.

My journey was just over an hour, train and bus from age 12. It was fun, meant you made friends on the train and they tended to be your friends at school and then you were all relatively local to each other at weekends.

ForalltheSaints · 01/06/2014 21:46

For Tiffin School it is worth the journey. My main advice would be to make sure he does not stay up late the night before each school day.

I commuted an hour each way from 11 too. Sometimes it was a designated school bus and other times a normal bus. Then I caught the train from 16. Then drove from 17. This was quite normal - lots of kids from my town did it.

I commuted an hour each way from 11 (by bus, in London). Gave me a chance to do my homework!

bruffin · 02/06/2014 08:01

I was going to say, i was communting to work in the City at 16. My dcs have commuted an hour to school since they were 11. Only a short train journey but quite long walk either end

DDs crap bus took an 1 hr. to do a 20 minute trip, it's one of the joys of rural life.

New bus company's route takes 40-45 minutes.

They take iPods and books, DD2 even talks to people.

BF and me got As for English-lit (long ago when there were O levels and As were far rarer), solely revising on our 10-15 minute bus ride. We were scientists and thought Eng-lit was a spectacular waste of time.

So I'm sure an A level student would manage.

Is is a fairly straightforward journey? Across London in the morning commute if you have to change more than once would be trickier than if there 's something reasonably direct. Also is there a fallback means if there's any interruption to the usual providers?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/06/2014 16:27

My journey to school at 10 was an hour on the bus and then a short walk, he'll be fine!

NCISaddict · 02/06/2014 16:39

My DS has been doing an hours commute each way since he was 14, on trains and bus. Doesn't seem to have been a problem for him.

my2bundles · 02/06/2014 19:08

At 16 I commuted an hour by bus then walked a further 30 minutes, your child will be fine in 2 years they will be considered adult so they should be able to manage an hours commute easily by 16.

shadypines · 02/06/2014 19:45

I tackled six buses a day to and from school from age 11(an hour approx. each way), if it's not too difficult a journey I wouldn't worry OP.
Do as many tester journeys as is feasible.
