My ds2 is 19 months and still in his pushchair and will be for a while yet. It's not practical for him to walk places yet as I have to have my older DCs at school for 8.30 and its a half mile walk. I don't drive so have to walk everywhere and it would be impossible to get anything done if he walked everywhere.

I've generally got rid of the pushchair when they started nursery at around 3 but they'd walk short distances from about 2 but I'd take the pushchair for when they got tired.

I think it depends on how far you usually walk each day. I can easily do 4 miles per day between three school runs and walking to the shops.

Ds is 2.9 and it's pretty much obsolete now. But we often take it shopping to load our wears onto rather than carry it all! And if he gets tired or it's really busy he'll hop into it for a bit.

Fairylea · 24/05/2014 20:34

It totally depends how much walking you have to do. We live in a very rural area so with dd I used it until she was about 3 and a half as there was no way she would have been able to walk the miles we had to walk to do anything let alone the activity at the end of it.

Times we did go out in the car to shopping areas and stuff like that we left the buggy at home from about 2 ish.

My youngest child is 2 now and he goes in the pushchair quite a lot for the same reasons as dd did. He loves walking but he also likes relaxing in the buggy when he's had enough.

I stopped using it regularly when DS started nursery, he was 3.3.

I took it with me most of the time up until then because it was a useful safety device if he wasn't walking safely near roads or if he got tired. I didn't have a car though. I think road safety is the most important thing and they need to be reliable before you ditch it altogether.

DD still in pushchair at 21 months. I tried having her walk somewhere earlier this week (with newborn DS in pushchair) and although fun it took ages as she likes to explore Grin

BrianButterfield · 24/05/2014 20:43

DS is 2.9 and sometimes goes in the double with his baby sister. He can walk a long way but sometimes he is tired or we're going further or he just likes riding in his special seat (it's a tandem and the front is a nice little toddler seat with its own hood which he likes). I don't have a problem with it - it's no different to using a buggy board which others of his age do.

petalunicorn · 24/05/2014 20:57

Weaning dd off now, she is 3 and a half with the aim for it to be gone totally by school starting age. We walk a lot, I have other children I have to consider with regards pace and road safety. My other children have walked earlier than her but they had to vacate for another sibling coming!

The vast majority of people who stop using the pushchair early use the car a lot. It's up to you and your lifestyle.

JassyRadlett · 24/05/2014 20:59

DS is 2.8, we use it to and from nursery (20 minute walk with pushchair, dread to contemplate without) and long day trips eg into London where he'll need a nap at some point, and there might be lots of walking. He's a fab walker though. Just not always in a straight line.

I think you're more than fine.

Theyaremysunshine · 24/05/2014 21:50

DS hated the buggy and was a great walker, so we barely used it from 18m, but I had a sling with me to back carry if he got tired (rare!).

Dd is a later walker and I suspect with the added complexity of an older brother for me to hang on to it'll me much later for her.

Kitty18 · 24/05/2014 21:55

Oh good dc can walk for about mile but it takes ages and unsafe we live near water so can't ave her walking near there feel better now I love my pushchair nice big shopping basket Grin

My twins are 20 months and haven't been in their pushchair for a couple of months now. They love to walk and are pretty good on reins.

BrianButterfield · 24/05/2014 22:06

Yes, shopping on foot with a pushchair is so much better!

Ohnonotagen · 26/05/2014 20:33

i think you still need to keep it for a while even when you rarely use it. DS just 4 and turned we've perhaps used 4 or 5 times in the last year and not for months and months. However we're going to a family party next month which is about a mile away and we'll prob have a couple of drinks so won't want to drive so will take pushchair so we can push DS home as we'll prob stay after his usual bedtime and guess he'll be tired from dancing and will moan to be carried

Makinglists · 26/05/2014 20:44

Ds2 is 3.6 and we stopped using it regularly at around 3 though we still have it for the run back from nursery twice a week - this is because cyclist DH does pick up and he has to manage bike, bags DS1 (from after school) and DS2 who is tired and grumpy. The only other time I used it recently was when DS2 had chickenpox and I had to do the school pick up- poor lad felt poorly and nodded off - hasn't done that in a pushchair for a year or so. If you walk a lot I think you probably need one until 3 but they are useful to have round for special cases for the next year or so.

Nancyclancy · 27/05/2014 00:42

My dd has just turned 3 and we'll still be using the pushchair for a while.
Not on a daily basis but we sometimes go for really long walks and she's too heavy to carry.

I stopped when DS was about 2 and started refusing to get into it. However, I don't recommend giving it away like we did as DS went through a 'carry me carry' phase which was hard work. I think he's going to be pretty happy to go everywhere on his scooter now thankfully but the carrying was a pain. he's 3 and a half now.

HolidayCriminal · 27/05/2014 18:33

Didn't stop until they were 5yo or nearly.

HolidayCriminal · 27/05/2014 18:34

Actually, DD still cadged the odd lift when she was 6yo. She weighed the same as 3yo brother so I couldn't see a reason to argue about it when brother felt like walking.

FriedaMensch · 27/05/2014 19:38

I would say stop using it when it becomes more bother than it is worth, or you find you are pushing it empty all the time.

I stopped quite early, I just found it such a pain when I had to get the train or bus, and because I was a sahm, I could usually plan my day to go at toddler pace. Dc1 stopped using it when they had been able to walk for about a year, and dc2 was walking everywhere about 6 months after taking very first steps. I like the freedom of not having a pushchair, and I couldn't wait to get rid of it Grin.

If it makes your life easier, keep it, if it doesn't, don't use it.

Dragonlette · 27/05/2014 19:46

Dd2 is 4 and still uses it occasionally. She walks the school run twice a day with the cm, she walks most places, but once or twice a month we walk into town. That's 2 miles each way, with whatever walking we do while we're there, it's too much for a 4yo, so we take the buggy. She probably walks more than she rides, but I wouldn't be able to get her home if she got too tired/fell over and we didn't have the buggy with us.
